Network Connection and Battery Life

I have noticed that my Touch stays connected to the Sprint Network with gray arrows. My battery life seems to go down pretty quickly and the phone seems to stay warm most of the time. Is there a way to have it disconnect and only connect when checking email?

Why is this happening in the first place? No reason I can see for a data connection unless I kick one off. This is quite annoying. Anyone???

I'm sorry, is this a built-in applet or 3rd party program? Thanks!
