rom? OS? hard/soft reset?

I see these terms being used by everyone, but I'm not quite sure I know what they mean. I cant find any definitions here on the website. I just purchased my phone today so I'm looking learn all this stuff. So for starters..... It seems as though everyone is chatting about a new OS WM6.1, is this something i should upgrade right now? what about ROM (I don't even really know what that is) do i need to upgrade this as well? I would also like to know how to soft/hard reset my phone and when i should perform these tasks.
