Let's speed up My Internet

Change your DNS server to OpenDNS

Do at your own risk, in the first hack you would normally delete the HTC_CM_Guardian.lnk from the Startup folder so HTC_CM_Guardian.exe won't start. Normally upon startup it will start and change back your DNS settings that we are going to change. HTC_CM_Guardian.exe sets your internet settings back to Sprints settings constantly. It starts everytime the Touch starts.

I couldn't find the HTC_CM_Guardian.lnk startup link in the \windows\startup folder on my Touch as it is on the Mogul so the Touch is starting the
HTC_CM_Guardian.exe from somewhere else, upon startup.

So since I couldn't stop it from starting I had to overwrite it with a inert file.

We are first going to copy the original HTC_CM_Guardian.exe file from \device\windows to a safe place for future use if ever needed. If you ever have trouble just copy the original back to \device\windows and soft reset or just execute it from wherever you saved it.

Next we are going to take a small inert file on our device and rename it to HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and then move it to the \device\windows folder on our touch and confirm overwrite (use Resco or similar to overwrite) so the real HTC_cm_guardian won't start.

Soft reset

Now for the actual settings change to Speed up browsing with OpenDNS:

Go to Start>Settings>Connections>Manage existing connections

Select SprintPCS, then Edit...

Hit Next and Next again, then click Advanced...

Under Servers tab select Use specific server address

Enter the following:

DNS: 208.67.222.222

Alt DNS: 208.67.220.220

Hit OK then Finish

Soft reset

When you first reconnect to the internet it will ask you for name\pass......well just leave the name and pass blank and check the box to remember.

Next are a few other Edits that I got from another website and they seem to have made a very noticeable difference, without any side effects for me.
The first ones are just changed values and then the others you create an entry, just "create a new DWORD value"

HKLM\Comm\Tcpip\Parms\
TcpMaxConnectRetransmissions = dword: 6
TcpWindowSize = dword: 256960

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings
MaxConnectionsPerServer = dword: 00000010

Create the following DWORD value in this directory (the 0 in "0server" is a number)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = dword: 00000020

In the following directory create all 3 DWORD values

HKLM\Comm\Tcpip\Parms\
Tcp1323Opts = dword: 1 (O before pts is the capital letter o)
TcpMaxDupAcks = dword: 2
EnablePMTUDiscovery = dword: 1

My Internet is sooooooooooo Frickin Fast now, really

I have included a "fake" HTC_CM_Guardian file to put on your phone in the windows file, it's just the PPST.dll file from Getspc renamed.
Attached Files
File Type: zip HTC_CM_Guardian.zip (70.6 KB, 654 views) Click for barcode!

Great work

Internet speed (throughput) didn't increase but the page loading time is amazing fast.

i allready had TCP1323Opts = 3
and you asked to create Tcp1323Opts = 1

I changed the original to 1, is this cap sensitive?

Its look like the phone prefer to connect now to X1 instead of EV

Found this :

Tcp1323Opts
Tcp1323Opts is a necessary setting in order to enable Large TCPWindow support as described in RFC 1323. Without this parameter, the TCPWindow is limited to 64K.
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Param eters
Tcp1323Opts="1"
(DWORD, recommended setting is 1. The possible settings are 0 - Disable RFC 1323 options, 1 - Window scaling but no Timestamp options, 3 - Window scaling and Time stamp options.)
Note: Tcp1323Opts="3" might help in some cases where there is increased packet loss, however generally you'll achieve better throughput with Tcp1323Opts="1", since Timestamps add 12 bytes to the header of each packet.

Yeah the OpenDNS definetely gives a nice little boost in page loading....

Here's a little simplified explaination of why it does what it does in case anyone doesn't know.....

A Domain Name System (DNS) server is a server that constantly maintains and accumulates a list of valid domain names from the internet and the actual I.P. addresses (204.67.176.408 ) that correspond to them, which is what we really need to go to a website.

Now when you type in "ppcgeeks.com" the request gets routed to the Sprint DNS servers, as each ISP use certain DNS servers, well by changing the settings we are routing our request to the OpenDNS servers.
The OpenDNS servers are a little faster than the ISP servers, so we get to the website a little faster. That's basically what's going on.

Question Re: Registry Tweaks/Hacks/Edits - Share them here!

So since I couldn't stop it from starting I had to overwrite it with a inert file.

Go to Start>Settings>Connections>Manage existing connections

Select SprintPCS, then Edit...

Hit Next and Next again, then click Advanced...

Under Servers tab select Use specific server address

Enter the following:

DNS: 208.67.222.222

Alt DNS: 208.67.220.220

Hit OK then Finish

HKLM\Comm\Tcpip\Parms\
TcpMaxConnectRetransmissions = dword: 6
TcpWindowSize = dword: 256960

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings
MaxConnectionsPerServer = dword: 00000010

Create the following DWORD value in this directory (the 0 in "0server" is a number)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = dword: 00000020

In the following directory create all 3 DWORD values

HKLM\Comm\Tcpip\Parms\
Tcp1323Opts = dword: 1 (O before pts is the capital letter o)
TcpMaxDupAcks = dword: 2
EnablePMTUDiscovery = dword: 1

My questions are: in later posts this tweak is "busted" because Sprint found out.

Does this tweak really work?

Would it work on Verizon?

Do you need a data plan with your provider before you could use it(Verizon in my case)?

Is this a way of getting Internet access for free without going thru your provider?

I guess I want to know if there is any risk associated with doing this tweak.

Please forgive me as I am a nOObb!

I know this is a year and a half old post, but I just found it. I have Verizon and am running Vin's 6.5 ROM. I cannot find the HTC_CM_Guardian.exe file anywhere. I have the settings to "show all files", so I know that nothing is hidden.

Well, if Vin included it in his ROM it would be in the main Windows folder. He may have not included it because basically it continually resets certain carrier specific items back to shipped settings. Ask Vin if he included it.
Also, this hack was basically busted if you read the posts that follow the original poster of this hack in this thread. Some of these reg edits may have been already done by Vin in his ROM. Use your reg editor to find out.
Good Luck!

Great Tip

Works awesome on Sprint Touch. Doesn't harm streaming radio, seems to load and cache faster. Also doesn't harm sprint tv, or BT music, radio, or tv. Great Tip Primenall, thanks a lot!!!! BTW internet speeds seem even faster than my desktop.
