You might save your current work and start new. Unarchive a clean kitchen, then run prepit on a new .nbh. Then you can copy your OEM's back into your new kitchen until you find your error. That's what I do. Just last night as a matter of fact, I was seperating the different components out of the stock rom, and somehow I ended up with 2 different DSM files in the oem I made for tf3d. It took some time to find those with all the 89383f_manila files in there and the non-descriptive error message! :)

Which rom? I can take a look at it tonight. Most of the roms I have seen in the diamond forum have rom protection so you can't decompile them.

got the touch pro and it is JD's ROM the newest version he says it has no protection on it

Dump a ROM

Ok a sorta backwards question but is there a tool to dump a ROM from a phone? If so what is it? I got a replacement 6900 and want to dump the stock ROM before I go messing around.

Thanks,
Steve

I had trouble downloading the rom in this thread in the first post...

If it's jd's 3.0, I couldn't download it. Please link me to a post or a link to the download.

I found the problem, I flashed the RUU_Signed_1_93OliNex_HSPL_UnsignedEdition and every thing went fine, and I am really amazed how the file size reduced that much! any idea?
Now I have 2 questions:
1 can I change the room name?
2 If I make OEM with the OEMizer which needs a serial number, is there any way to include the serial so that it will be a registered software? do have a tutorial for that?

Thanks

Some roms are built with newer/different tools. Quite a few kitchens now-a-days are slightly modified versions of kitchens that were found elsewhere. This method usually doesn't work if your donor rom was built with ppckitchen's. Thus the shrinkage. A good indicator without flashing is check to see if the registry hives are in ..\kitchen\SYS\MetaData. Your looking for user.hv and default.hv..

1. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...658#post609658
2. You'll need to find where the program puts the registration information. Either a registry entry or a data file.

Make sure you are using the correct kitchen for your device. I haven't verified the tp identifier. If you are using the right kitchen and are still having problems, post the first line when you goto Startmenu-Settings-DeviceInformation -- IdentityTab. It should say like DIAM500 or RAPHxxx or something... This information is in this kitchen @ ..\kitchen\tools\vogue_nbh.txt

Re: How to Customize a Custom Rom: Adding/Removing Programs

so this tutorial doesn't work with roms created with ppckitchen?

i am trying to deconstruct groove and mightyrom and omj to try and pick and choose the programs that I want from each (imho each has pros and cons, so I am trying to get at a compromise between the three)

i'm guess each has some sort of "rom protection" since when I run prepit i end up with an oem folder containing a folder named "BETA, create your own rom"

during the dump process, all the files are created in the dump folder, but they are not placed into an oem or sys folder; then all the files are deleted when the dump finishes

is there any way to deconstruct these roms?

I think they all use protection so you can't see whose parts their using? OMJ doesn't on his.

pm on the way...

Re: How to Customize a Custom Rom: Adding/Removing Programs

edit: yah didn't

i was able to find a grove oem base at the least -- so thats a start

i just wanted to be sure that i included tweaks from mightymike/omj into whatever custom rom i built; reading through all the registry options/tweaks looks like it would take forever

thanks for a great tool

Apparently not. No particular effort has been made to make them not work, however.

Yes, that is the sign of having stripped information used to deconstruct the rom.

There are ways. None so easy as working with an untampered rom, however.

I've figured out how to take a cooked rom uncook it and put it into a basic kitchen now what I would like to do is upgrade the os with the latest updates. How would I do this while preserving everything else? Oh I also would lile to update system apps like HTC Comm manager etc. I understand how to cook the rom how to add oems etc just can't figure out how to UPGRADE an excisting rom "I have permission from the chef"

After you have deconstructed the donor rom, grab the OEM that you want to upgrade and put it in your OEM folder. Then what I do is open the side-by-side explorer windows with your kitchen OEM directory on one side and the new OEM on the other. In your .\kitchen\OEM side, search for the files from the new OEM and delete them. When you search, they will show up twice. Check the location. You want to delete the one out of OEMAPPS, not out of NEW_COMM_OEM. Once you get all you can, run buildos and it will find the other duplicates for you....

As you've noticed from RStoyguy's description, upgrading is a complete pain in the *** with bepe kitchens. It's trivial w/ ppckitchen though, so work on rstoyguy (and eveyrone else) to upgrade :)

Is this a hint that using ppc kitchen would be easier?

As a general statement, making a base is easier in PPCk. Swapping parts between ppck bases is trivial. This is because PPCk strongly encourages chefs to package their customizations seperately from the bases. Bepe style kitchens (old and new) require chefs to make most changes directly to the bases, so you have to essentially ferret out whatever the kitchen base maker's changed, merge the bases, and then reapply the changes. In PPCk, because the customizations are encapsulated like one or more OEM packs (chefs choice), it's as simple as picking a device, WM build, and picking oem packages (of which chef so-and-so's tweaks are just another example of).

Of course, the first step to making everyone's life easier is getting chef's to quit making their changes directly to whatever base they are working on - and that means getting them to quit using old bepe tools at a minimum.

That's an advanced topic, and in here I wanted to stick to K.I.S.S. theory and put folks on the basic path. You may want to search for that topic on xda-developers.

Re: How to Customize a Custom Rom: Adding/Removing Programs

i am trying to do this with one of of dcd's roms, but cant get it to work (it is v4.1.2). when i use buildos, it says that boot.hv is missing. so what i do is get it off of his 4.0.0 kitchen (build 20081218) and put it in the XIP folder. the rom builds fine and everything but when i try to program it in my phone, it does not want to boot up, it just stays in the second splash screen. (dont think boot.hv is just a coincidence on why the phone doesnt boot)

heyy guyss gotta question. Still trying to build my own roms. I'm so close to finishing to. Everytime i build it in buildos it works great, compiles it great, then i click on buildit...seems like it works okay...i go to ruu to flash it and i look at the ruu_signed.nbh and its only 1kb. Its like nothing is in there. I even try clicking on the update utility and it errors out, probably because there is nothing in the file. Anybody know why it's doing this. I get no errors in buildos, it creates the temp file as well. i assume that the problem lies around the buildit part.

This kitchen unfortunately has a size limitation. (it was built back in the apache days...) Can't build anything over ca. 125 meg's

I have migrated over and use calcu's kitchen now, a brief 15 line tutorial/how to can be found here. I'll create a new tutorial soon. Or convert this kitchen.

The easiest approach would be to find an OEM for the program you want to delete. Search the ..\OEM and ..\SYS folders for the files in that OEM and delete them. Then drop the OEM into ..\OEM and use buildos to find the remaining duplicates. Then once you get a complete build, delete the OEM you used to find the duplicates with.

Re: How to Customize a Custom Rom: Adding/Removing Programs

Download ppckitchen_oem_vga.rar from ppckitchen.org. There is an OEM inside for tf3d, extract it, then search your rom directory for the same files and delete those. Ensure that in your computers file explorer that you have it set so you can see system files. "Show hidden files and folders", otherwise the bulk of the *_manila files won't show.
