Slide out keyboard: White screen, checker pattern

My brother been pretty rough with his phone and dropped it a few times so this may be hardware related. 3 out of 4 times when he slides the keyboard out the screen goes all white and has this weird lines/checkered board pattern. I just flashed a new ROM on his device hoping that would fix it but no luck. Any suggestions?
