Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
So, yesterday I was using my Verizon Touch Pro to navigate around in Boston. I fly back to Chicago, and I fire up Google Maps, and the phone soft resets itself after achieving a satellite lock. I thought this might just be a strange quirk, so I wait for the reset the complete, and try again... a few seconds after it gets a satellite lock, it soft resets again.
This time I pull the battery, wait several seconds, then replace the battery and power up... then try Google Maps again... after a lock, another soft reset. I then try the HTC GPS tool, and set to the right chip, cold start, etc. like I've done so many times in the past, and watch it scan for satellites. It finds a bunch, but as soon as it gets a lock, the data stream stops... a few seconds later, a soft reset. I do a hard reset on the device, same issue. I flash an entirely different ROM (Was using MightryROM 6, now SSK), same issue... So... do you folks think this is a hardware issue, or is there some sort of radio/etc. rom corruption going on? |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
sounds like hardware unfortunately, obviously I can be mistaken, so anyone else can feel free to add their two cents in.
|
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Probably nopt the GPS itself but the com port circuitry of the phone...
try pairing the phone with a laptop via BT and see it that also crashes. |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
To see if it is really a software or hardware, you can go back to a "Stock" rom to verify the problem is still there, and if that also gives you the problem then you know it is bad, when you go "custom rom" that is not the true orig rom as per say to troubleshoot issues dealing with a possible hardware.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
I am having the exact same issue. Working great for the last year, then yesterday, serious gps issues. Tried everything too, new roms, old roms, hard resets, soft resets, nothing seems to work.
Let me know if you get any thing figured out, and I will do the same. Brew |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Might be a strange coincidence, but mine started doing it tonight too. As soon as I let Google Maps get a lock on the GPS is soft resets. I'll let you know if I figure anything out. FYI, I'm on JD's 6.5 rom and Telus 1.04.05 radio.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
I have been using mighty4.16 on mine. I just flashed to the newer stock sprint rom and so far everything is working again. I might give it a couple days to see if I like the rom, then maybe try flashing back to mighty and give it a whirl.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
I tried a hard reset and it didn't fix the issue, but then I flashed the radio from Telus to the Sprint shipped radio and it fixed the issue, but I have a new one. :) The GPS now works after a soft reset very quickly and then doesn't lock again. I'm sure I can do some searching and find a fix for that, but I might just try a different ROM. :)

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
hey guys,
same issue, BELL canada. the moment any program got a lock.. soft-reset and i too flashed to a different radio... and it fixed it. before i changed radios, i did everything else hard reset... install one piece of gps software. hard reset..tried another.. and so on. but ya the radio flash fixed mine right away. fyi i switched to the verizon cdma.. as i heard it was good. seems my gps not only works but locks even faster. |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
my tp had gps issues, sprint checked it out and said it was a hardware problem and replaced it on the spot with a nib unit. this was 3mnths ago.
|
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
My TP had the GPS fail (had a problem with the screen at the same time). Wasn't soft rebooting, just could not see sats anymore. VZW replaced it.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Exactly same happen to me too. Was fine until yesterday, Sprint with NFSFAN ROM. Will flush back to stock ROM today and try again.
Wierd though, so many people at the same time with the same problem??? Any ideas? |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Same thing happened here! I was on my way to downtown Chicago with Google Maps running to check for traffic when it suddenly reset itself around 5:30pm! I waited until about 6 to try again, but each time it got a GPS lock, the phone would freeze and reset. It was also at that same time I was having trouble viewing certain pages in Opera, but that might be an unrelated issue. In any case, it seems to have resolved itself, but I don't like my phone being at the mercy of the network simply to run. Running MightyROM 6.5 here.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
gotta add my 2 cents also. This is unreal!! Last night and today, soon as i get a sat lock with either google maps, bing, or gps today, my TP softresets itself. I flashed like 4 different roms, thinking that was the cause. Then i read this thread. WTF is going on? Can this be coincidence? Seems like alot of similar gps issues all of a sudden. Not sure what radio im using, but it worked fine for months, until now that is. veeery weird.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
My issues still have not resolved. I am using official Sprint radio. If flashing back to Sprint ROM does not solve the issue, I will go to the repair store.
BTW, are all of the problems in Chicago area only??? |

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
I am in the twin cities. Flashing back to the updated stock rom did fix it for me, at for the time being. I have been tempted to now go back to mighty, and give it a whirl, but I hate setting everything back up, and all the custom roms I have used started to weird out after a couple weeks, so I kinda want to try a stocker for a while.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
central pa(hershey) mine was awhile ago though, no issue since refurb.
|
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Interesting. I DID flash back to stock ROM yesterday, but did not test anything, and immediately flashed back to the custom ROM, and all the issues are back today.
|
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Chicago area here.
The issues are becoming more widespread. Now my texts are sending/receiving out of order and my phone is locking up at random times. I'm going to see if my friends who use a Palm and an Instinct on Sprint are having issues. |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
I'm now having issues also....
Minneapolis I flash to updated stock to see if it sticks..... GPS locks then soft resets....otherwise the phone just freezes.... Seems to have been worse yesterday not as bad today... But once I get outside I'll see..... Yesterday it happened on both Psyki's rom and Indagrooves new one... Within Psyki's rom thread someone was has issues too.....I think it was mentioned by Psyki or the poster that was haing the problems that it could possibly be a corupt QuickGPS file or something.... |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Hello,
Just wanted to chime in on this. I live in Dallas Texas and I am experiencing the exact same issues on my VZW TP. I noticed this problem on Monday and haven't been able to resolve I was running SSK Rom with no issues so I loaded a new Rom last night but that did not fix the problem. Haven't switched back to OEM Rom but might try that real soon I leave for Europe on Sunday and need my TP ready. Hope some one can lend a hand on how to resolve this strange issue. Could a VZW update cause something to go bad? |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Checked with my friends on Sprint in Chicago; no problems with Palm Pre.
Looks like the TP issue?? |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
guys..
the fix was posted up above. flash the radio. i have used the same rom for months. its not rom related. not sure what it is, but flashing the radio fixed it for me and others posted. just grab a radio you want to try and flash it. I am CDMA so i grabbed the verizon cdma radio. works perfect and gps actually locks faster, and battery lasts a bit longer. |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
From Canada on BELL here and same issues too... since monday too actually,
sometimes GPS shows within 2300 meters in google maps and then justs crashes.... This is really odd that so many people are experiencing the same problem with the exact same symptoms in a same time frame, can we rule out hardware issues ? Mine did in fact a soft reset after GPS 3D lock, and on any gps app( google map, garmin, gwatch etc...) ... Just my 2 cents could this be a "quick GPS" issue.. maybe an out of sync timing or something sent from the website might keep our gps out of sync or sends error after a GPS lock ? I understand flashing the radio is a good solution but I would like to take this option as last resort as I cannot find any BELL radios if ever I need to go back to a fully stock TP. should we just wait and issue might solve itself ? anybody has a suggestion for this issue without flashing the radio ? thx to all Joe |

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
well, not being a programmer i am not sure..
but i would think quick gps only gives reference for other programs? not sure at all as its all theory. sure does seem like it hit everyone and that seems to be the common in all of this. so then does qgps right something to the registery? and if so does flashing the radio overwrite the registery? all therorys |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
It does appear flashing a new Radio has fixed the problem for me but from my experiance with it, I think QuickGPS was Involved somehow....Before I flashed the new radio, all my GPS programs would work fine...until I updated my QuickGPS Data, then... reboots....Then Hard reset...everything fine again....QuickGPS Again....Reboots Again! IDK....Weird Stuff! Maybe something corrupted the Radio's and QuickGPS triggered the problem?
|
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Same problem here... Up till a few days ago, all was well with GPS, now getting resets everytime I lock... For those who reflashed the Radio and got GPS working again, did you try running QuickGPS afterwards? Did the GPS keep working without the reset issue?
|
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
I agree, it really seems like this is a quickgps issue. I changed radios last night, and all was well. Until i ran quickgps this morning. Now once again, soon as i get a sat lock, it softresets. Im gonna pull out my keychainngps receiver, and see how that goes.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
My wife and I tp gps both went out at the same time using different roms. (psyki and nrg) so I knew it had to be something else beside the rom doing the dirt.
Flashed stock rom on mine and radio back to custom rom and it worked. For my wife I figured I just try radio only instead. BOOM! That did the trick. So somehow both radios went bad. Don't ask me how. But I was scared at first thinking "Hardware failure on both, at the same time!!" |

So Far, (Knock on Wood) It seems to have fixed the issue for me....I have been running "QuickGPS" since yesturday evening with no problem's, but dschoenike still seems to be having issues...which makes me REALLY nervous...I will be nervous until someone comes up with a reason that this happened to begin with! It's just bizzare, almost like a virus or corrupt files were sent from the carriers, and thats the scary part...it was accross multiple carriers! I'm just curious...Did this happen to anyone that was running a totally stock and locked TP? Or did it happen to just us with unlocked/custom roms! IDK dschoenike, Have you tried a different radio? I am running the VZW 1.03.09V radio, so far with NP. Also, someone posted this in the psyki thread.... "To everyone having GPS problems- Try downloading the QuickGPS again while synced. Mine updated @ 11:09 tonight and both Sprint Nav and Google are working fine." I dont know if that meens to download the QuickGPS "Data" while synced or the actual QuickGPS program? Would it make a difference in DL'ing the Data while synced, does it get the data from a different source on the web while synced? Good Luck, 0Gravity |

Since this seams to be accross carriers .. I think this is Fully quickGPS related.. maybe some Time issue... (Since GPS is all about time Sync) Just My 2 cents: does anybody think this could be a DST issue on the QuickGPS data servers ?... My theory is simple... If for some reason the QuickGPS "Server" is not up to date on the DST (Since If I'm right last sunday would've been the OLD DST change) the 1 hour shift would probably cause the gps to do some errors like that beeing off by one hour this is just a shot in the dark.... |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Just for the hell of it, I tried turning the cellular radio off and connected to my home's Wi-Fi network and ran Google Maps with my GPS active and it still crashed!

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

Going back to stock ROM (Bell) doesn't make a difference. But maybe we can assume that the GPS portion of the radio seem to have a conflict with quickGPS or sync time... I just don't know why the DST seems to make more and more sense... since CAN/US are almost the only place in the world that finish their DST on the first sunday of Nov instead of last Sunday of October (like almost everywhere else).... we didn't have this problem last year(at least I don't think) so maybe this is totally unrelated... maybe it will get fixed by next sunday when DST will finish in US/CAN.... any ideas ? The other thing I don't understand is the reaction the GPS is having... I would at first get a softreset after a GPS lock ... now the gps justs "disapear" and becomes unavailable until I softreset.... |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
This problem sure has been weird.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Yup. Same issue here. Michigan. Garmin XT sees the GPS, gets a lock, and then BOOM! Gone. No GPS device found. Soft reset, same thing. It won't soft reset on it's own though, only with HTC GPS tool does it reset on it's own when it gets a lock. Weird. I'm putting the blame on qgps as well.

If not..... :cussing: Not sure... I flashed last night, all was well this morning... Tried to get a fix a few minutes ago and I got a fix to a location 30 miles from here, and it was moving... Hope its just the rain clouds reflecting signal... Hey, how can we "expire" the data in QuickGPS, or deactivate it? |

But no success with this option either .... can quick GPS itself modify or corrupt the GPS portion radio? |
Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?
Another Michigander with the GPS issue. I am on Sprint using the latest Mightyrom and neither TomTom nor Live Search will get a fix on Satellites. TomTom would look and then before it would get a fix, the TP would soft reset. After trying TomTom several times, it now doesn't soft reboot on it's own but just won't find a satellite. I am not going to do anything but wait until next week to see if it somehow fixes itself or until one of you who are far smarter than myself figures it out.
