I'm in Michigan and my Sprint TP does the same thing.
I'm using indagroove's "Stock" Upgraded Sprint WM 6.5 Touch Pro ROM

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

Note: I posted this on another thread which was primarily for Touch Diamond - should have actually posted it here since this is geared more towards TPs. (my apologies for double posting).

I've got a Sprint Touch Pro (CDMA of course), factory/stock ROM (v1.03.651.4; and I should point out that I've never modded my phone or used any custom ROM), and out of nowhere, yesterday my GPS started acting fishy. It seems very peculiar that so many people started having these issues the last day or two (I don't use the GPS every day, but I know for a fact that when I used it last week, I had no issues whatsoever).

At first, I wasn't sure what was causing the freeze / reboots (I thought the battery may be slipping / bad connectors), but then I noticed that it happened only when I used Google Maps / Bing.

I use Google Maps and Bing, and with Google Maps, it will find me on the GPS, but as I drive, it won't really "track" my movement. Eventually, it will just reboot. Ocassionally, it reboots before it actually finds me on the GPS.

I uninstalled Google Maps, cleared all related files, etc, and reinstalled it - same result.

Tried Bing, and it won't find me on GPS - eventually it just freezes, and I need to reboot.

I've soft reset the device multiple times to no avail - I haven't hard reset it yet, but I may just try that (hate to have to reinstall all my apps).

I'm going to try downloading a new ROM version that HTC's US website has for the Sprint TP devices (2.01.651.6; ROM date is 7/27/09, release date on HTC US website is 9/25/09).

The most interesting thing about this issue is that it seems to have affected Touch Pros / Touch Diamonds from various carriers, and all around the same time - just all of a sudden, all these devices go haywire! This has got to be more than a coincidence.

I should add that for me QuickGPS seems to be working fine - even just now, I did a fresh download from QuickGPS without any problem.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

I am happy to report that I disabled Quick GPS updates and loaded the provided bin file above and it SEEMS to be working. I've checked google and bing with equal results (success!). I have also checked Garmin XT and that seems to pull a signal quite well (and I'm in the middle of a building ).

Huge thanks for that Bin file. It will be interesting to see if this all goes away on Sunday with the DST change.

Nice of HTC to be of no help on this issue by the way. I do enjoy speaking to CS in our own country, but sending my phone in for replacement and/or flashing the ROM was not the answer to this problem.

Okay, I did this exactly and now my GPS programs work fine. I have Sprint TP and the Mighty Rom. I was having the same problems as everyone else and have done nothing (hard resets, flashing other Roms or radios) other than:

1. Disabling quick GPS
2. replacing my windows file with the one posted in the above quote
3. Soft reset

I hope this helps everyone and THANKS so much!!

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

Reloading stock ROM did not work (this time, did last time)

Disabling Quick GPS [Factory default is no update anyway]
Installing old xtra.bin
Soft reset

Did not work for me either.

This is not looking good.

What I think I may have to do is Reload ROM and NEVER run QuickGPS (which I did do).

Me too, I always get an almost instant accurate fix(within 80 meters) but this is just for 2.5 sec.. then crash, com4 becomes unresponsive and no satellite found until I soft reset... very frustrating....

Thank you ! My last file was from early September so I guess a bit too old... unfortunately still no success for me.

are these problems unheard of on a GSM point of view ?... is this an isolated CDMA situation ?

I tried putting to test my DST theory and tried all kinds of time zone spoofing and combination of time.... again no succes ....

I agree we're still trying to pinpoint the big WHY ?

anybody tried to contact their service provider about this issue ?... I personally did and got the standard automatic answer (hard reset, if nothing go to a store for bla bla bla....)Tried to reach a second level tech and they've never heard of this (for bell anyways)

I'm very glad it worked for you... is this a new phone ?or you've had this phone for a little while ? (maybe newer radios react better with this workaround)

I did this as well with Stock and Nrg rom even leaving the phone off all the time... not even a glimpse of hope.... nothing...

this is very frustrating as I need this GPS badly for tomorrow... I guess i'll have to wait for sunday morning 2 am.... for a big maybe

I should add the bin file will only work for those using Version 1.0 of QuickGPS (this is the version in the Mighty ROM) I've read other versions of QuickGPS use a file called "packedephemeris.ee" instead of xtra.bin and I don't know if simply renaming the file will help... Found good info on QuickGPS here:

Well, then that's good news for anyone running the MightyRom such as myself. At least we know that adding the bin file for anyone with MightyRom will allow their GPS to work again. Not a true fix but the easiest for some. I know someone's going to figure this out. Lots of knowledge on this forum
