Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

This problem sure has been weird.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

Note: I posted this on another thread which was primarily for Touch Diamond - should have actually posted it here since this is geared more towards TPs. (my apologies for double posting).

I've got a Sprint Touch Pro (CDMA of course), factory/stock ROM (v1.03.651.4; and I should point out that I've never modded my phone or used any custom ROM), and out of nowhere, yesterday my GPS started acting fishy. It seems very peculiar that so many people started having these issues the last day or two (I don't use the GPS every day, but I know for a fact that when I used it last week, I had no issues whatsoever).

At first, I wasn't sure what was causing the freeze / reboots (I thought the battery may be slipping / bad connectors), but then I noticed that it happened only when I used Google Maps / Bing.

I use Google Maps and Bing, and with Google Maps, it will find me on the GPS, but as I drive, it won't really "track" my movement. Eventually, it will just reboot. Ocassionally, it reboots before it actually finds me on the GPS.

I uninstalled Google Maps, cleared all related files, etc, and reinstalled it - same result.

Tried Bing, and it won't find me on GPS - eventually it just freezes, and I need to reboot.

I've soft reset the device multiple times to no avail - I haven't hard reset it yet, but I may just try that (hate to have to reinstall all my apps).

I'm going to try downloading a new ROM version that HTC's US website has for the Sprint TP devices (2.01.651.6; ROM date is 7/27/09, release date on HTC US website is 9/25/09).

The most interesting thing about this issue is that it seems to have affected Touch Pros / Touch Diamonds from various carriers, and all around the same time - just all of a sudden, all these devices go haywire! This has got to be more than a coincidence.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

My wife and I tp gps both went out at the same time using different roms. (psyki and nrg) so I knew it had to be something else beside the rom doing the dirt.

Flashed stock rom on mine and radio back to custom rom and it worked. For my wife I figured I just try radio only instead.

BOOM! That did the trick. So somehow both radios went bad. Don't ask me how. But I was scared at first thinking "Hardware failure on both, at the same time!!"

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

Just for the hell of it, I tried turning the cellular radio off and connected to my home's Wi-Fi network and ran Google Maps with my GPS active and it still crashed!

Thx for the test... I tried that as well but same result for me...
Going back to stock ROM (Bell) doesn't make a difference.

But maybe we can assume that the GPS portion of the radio seem to have a conflict with quickGPS or sync time... I just don't know why the DST seems to make more and more sense... since CAN/US are almost the only place in the world that finish their DST on the first sunday of Nov instead of last Sunday of October (like almost everywhere else).... we didn't have this problem last year(at least I don't think) so maybe this is totally unrelated... maybe it will get fixed by next sunday when DST will finish in US/CAN.... any ideas ?

The other thing I don't understand is the reaction the GPS is having... I would at first get a softreset after a GPS lock ... now the gps justs "disapear" and becomes unavailable until I softreset....

Yup. Same issue here. Michigan. Garmin XT sees the GPS, gets a lock, and then BOOM! Gone. No GPS device found. Soft reset, same thing. It won't soft reset on it's own though, only with HTC GPS tool does it reset on it's own when it gets a lock. Weird. I'm putting the blame on qgps as well.

I'm in Michigan and my Sprint TP does the same thing.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

I'm also having the same problem. Running TopazSmoke on US Cellular. GPS went out on me Tuesday morning. Tried flashing back to stock, then reflash. Things were good but then QuickGPS downloaded an update automatically on me and I have the same issue.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

I have a Diamond and I am experiencing the same thing. I was playing around with gpsgate and assumed that's what caused the problem... but after reading this I think it's the same problem.

Re: Does GPS ever just 'go bad'?

Same problem here in Naples, Fl. on Sprint network. Was using NRG 23081 with 1.03 sprint ROM. Flashed danced to sprint oem with no luck. Tired two other peoples ROM's still with no luck. Flashed to 1.12 radio on stock ROM and everything is fine so far. This is freaking weird!!!!
