I've had that happen to my TP, when it was on ac power and I pulled the battery out.
I'm waiting for the day that my TP's on the charger and I pull the battery out and it stays running like any logical device would.

Maybe it was running off of some magnetic interference/field that was nearby. Dunno. I think these devices must have an internal backup battery in them to hold some data. Maybe it was running off of that.???
