i may have spoken too soon..
I just flashed my phone and didn't have any threaded messages in there yet.
I was able to get it to stick by switching to the classic sms setting. (not sure if it's necessary)
While composing a new sms (not responding) it was still counting.
I also removed it from 2 places in compose_sms.htm and it no longer counts there either.. woohoo!

so far it seems quicker, but I haven't really used my phone much yet since the flash & mods
