question about sleep

I'm sure this will get 1 response of RTFM, buuuut...

When my touch pro is "asleep" it won't alert me of sms or email messages. i'm used to my BB which would "bong" when I get a new message.

What am I doing wrong? Is this a shortcoming of WM 6?

Please say "No" and "here's the fix.."
