Just as an update (as I'm adding new contact photos), the new HTC Album 3.0 oddly tells me that it will upsample if the resolution is 267x267, but tells me to crop if the resolution is 268x268. It's a sliggght change in resolution, but I'd use either one for the optimal quality contact photos.
