Recieving emails like a Blackberry

So I just switched to the touch pro from the curve. I know about send/receive email. Can the pro automatically get emails with out me telling it to check..
Sorry dont quite understand push email technology. I have set up a hotmail account (not an exchange or anything fancy). Im not getting emails as I should.....
