Does QuickGPS help performance in Google Maps?

there are different oppinions on this, some say using quickgps does something to the assisted part, and prevents quick locks with no sattelites present, while others say it's the best thing ever. I have always used it, but have never really noticed a difference either way

My understanding/experience is that it helps obtain a lock. I did a quick search and found a discussion on it.
