Question Discussion: WinMo 6.5 upgrade theory.

So, I'm sure everyone's seen the recent announcement that Microsoft will allow pre-existing devices to be upgraded to WinMo 6.5, if they meet specific hardware requirements...

Engadget Mobile post regarding Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrades.

"Finally, Microsoft's issued a clarification regarding upgrades from 6.1 to 6.5: devices that are already out in the marketplace with a minimum of 128MB of RAM and a 400MHz processor or better are theoretically capable of being upgraded -- it's all up to licensees to decide whether they want to go to the trouble of offering the upgrades to their customers. Let's hope, shall we?"

I think the question for owners of Sprint's Touch Pro, what would it take to get a ROM upgrade with WinMo 6.5 on it?

The first idea that comes to my mind would be a petition, but I think Sprint and HTC's point of view needs to be considered as well.
The original Touch Pro was sold as a "Windows Mobile 6.1" device, is there any obligation for them to build a WinMo 6.5 ROM for the Touch Pro? My gut tells me no.

What if we, as in the consumer, were willing to pay for the upgrade? Would that even open the door for Sprint and HTC to consider building the 6.5 ROM?
If so, what would the price point need to be for both Sprint/HTC, and us the consumer to feel it is worth it?

I'm more curious what the community thinks about this.
Would a petition be worth it?
Would a petition with the option of consumer's buying said upgrade be worth it?

What are your thoughts?

if u just want a 6.5 rom there are plenty on these boards, but if u r willing to pay for a stock 6.5 rom then cool but im not...if they do gives us a upgrade then it will prolly be next year cuz 6.5 is a selling point for the new touch pro & diamond

You bring up a good point.

What some of the community members have been able to do with the ROM's they've gotten' ahold of is quite amazing from what I've read, let alone the 6.1 ROM's.

Though in light of the recent events regarding "cooked ROM's", as in Microsoft trying to have the cooked ROM's pulled offline, it would seem that it may be technically illegal for them to be built/used.
Leaving the consumer to look to "official channels" to get software upgrades for these advanced devices.

I can understand Microsoft and the manufacturer's wanting to protect thier interest, but it's also sad that the community members with such great talent are basically being told that they are doing something bad.

Too bad it's not possible to have two good sides to a double-edged sword.

maybe they do give us an update, as they did when updating last generation devices from 6.0 to 6.1 (such as the Mogul and the Touch/Vogue)

I'm sure they'd rather make us pay for the Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2 instead.

Please for the love of god, NO MORE PETITIONS. Sorry but those threads are so annoying and correct me if I'm wrong, but has a petition got anything done besides creating threads with a hundred pages of people whining.

Just my two cents

Online petitions do absolutely nothing, nada, zilch. The people at the company you send them to don't even read it, I bet the secretary doesn't even forward it to the person its supposed to go to. I actually would like to see one petition that changed someones idea at a company. That said, I don't even use the stock ROM for my TP, why would I pay for it? If you want 6.5, you can go get it right now-

When they see their sales numbers dwindle slightly, because of the lack of the ability to flash to a different ROM then they might reconsider.
Lets face it, Windows Mobile devices quite frankly stink comin out the
Gates =D> <--No pun intended..
I know I bought my TP with the assumption, that there would be custom ROMS out there to flash eventually to fix the bugs that Sprint is too lazy fix themselves or even recognize, that and to write my own apps for the TP2 but Microsoft is no better. They take forever to fix the smallest thing.

Maybe the cellular gods will have mercy on us poor and persecuted windows mobile folk as they did with WM6.0. I think VZW and Sprint both released 6.1 ROM upgrades in the middle of the Mogul's life.

Re: Discussion: WinMo 6.5 upgrade theory.

As previously posted... we will have much better roms well before the carriers ever think of putting one out. if for some reason you think you need to stay with a stock rom my guess is you will have to wait for a new device unless sprint has other upgrades they want to test out before the next wave of new phones.

Of course the more released roms the better and it would be nice to have some new radios to play with
