Touch Pro Bad Reception/ No Data Plan

Is it true that if you are a tp without the data plan that the recpetion/phone in general will wont function the way it is supposed to? this is what i was told my a sprint representative... Thanks for the help!

No....99.9% of Sprint reps are idiots that do as little as possible to get by. The TP will function without a data plan just no internet or you will get charged by the minute. Don't believe anything the reps tell you cuz 9/10, they are wrong.
