Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

Right. The garmin is crystal clear and easy to read. I guess I will just have to find out if it is a killer on the touch pro battery. I am trying to see so I know if I need to get a extra battery or something.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

Garmin stuff is awesome, I have five stand-alone Garmin GPS units (including one on my Harley) & also GarminXT in my TouchPro.

Although I have used other brands (I have used NAV units for years, my first one had a black/white screen) I always come back to Garmin.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

I assume you are with sprint. You did not mention sprint navigation it is a fair comparison I have used all three and have all three installed. Note battery life is of no concern to me. I personally think the battery life on Touch pro is better then any other windows mobile phone sprint has had.My personal chose is between sprint and garmin I have both and use both

Sprint naviation
Does traffic well and is free if you have nav
can search for buisiness and poi better because web based and allows to dial number
maps look good
voice annouces street names
is web based no maps stored so no data connection no work
routing is not as good
and if in a dense city with alot of quick turns tends to not update quick enough for next turn
can plot route from PC on sprints nav web site

garmin
excelent routing the best between all three
maps are more up to date then tomtom
novoice annouce street names
caches shortcuts better then both tomtom and sprint goes back to better routing
verry little customization
not great with poi only if manually add
advance PC software for advance route plannig.

TOMTOM
similar to garmin
Best looking 3D maps
Very customisable can even create own voices
routing better then sprint but not as good as garmin
maps onboard
no voice annouce street

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

I have used TOMTOM and Garmin. I think that TomTom has WAY more options in the sense of customization, but Garmin is more user friendly.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

I have 8 GPS's intalled on my Touch. Compairing Garmin and TomTom, garmin has rich UI. Very nice colorful interface. But lacks some simple options like remaining miles to the next turn. It lags at times coz i think the UI is so heavy. TomTom in the other hand is more accurate and more detailed to navigate with. Like " You will reach your destination to the right". It even says which side is your destination. And trust me, TomTom has the worlds most up to date maps. They have POI's that other GPS does not have in them yet. This is just purely my observation. Everyone has their own preference.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

This is all a matter of opinion of course, but when I compare TT & garmin I find that 95% of the time I believe that Garmin has picked a better route from point A to point B.

Sometimes it is only minor differences, but I had a route generated by both systems last Summer where the TT route was 24 miles longer than the Garmin route.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

I use Garmin XT mostly because I can adjust the maps that I load onto my phone. I currently only have NY, Connecticut and Massachusetts which takes up < 100mb of my SD cards memory. If I ever need to travel outside of that area, I'll just load up the maps with City navigator. Ever since TomTom 6, I believe you have to load the entire countries maps for it to work as there is no way to break down the maps. I'd rather save the extra 1 or 2gb for other stuff. Another reason I switched was because TomTom5 didn't auto-start GPS, where Garmin was pretty much automated and locked pretty much as soon as you start up the program

Garmins free online services like find cheapest/nearest gas station, traffic, weather and even flight data are also really nice. I haven't used a TomTom in forever so I don't know how their online services compare or if they are free or not.

One thing I miss about having TomTom 5 is that Garmin is much 'slower' in terms of frames per second. The map updates perhaps once a second, whereas on TomTom its very fluid.

another option is google maps. im gonna see what kind of route if gives me for going home tonight. i usually use XT but for some reason it ran better and looked better on my titan than on the TP.
