Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

hello guys, I been using the Garmin XT and love it. However, I could not get the garmin xt to display in horizontal mode unless I open up the keyboard. Is there a software out there the force certain program to be in horizontal mode? I know of FlipIt, but the program has so many bugs when I use it.

gsen or gyrator might work with it...
I actually like it with the keyboard open so I can easily use the spell features with one hand.

Google Maps does the job for me. And it's free.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

I have both Garmin XT and TT7 on my Touch Pro and I prefer Garmin. I'm not quite sure exactly why. I think I just like how the menus are laid out and I think the graphics are much better.

Maybe I like it better because I installed and got used to it first, but that's the one I like.

I do wish there was a way to put time left to destination on the driving screen instead of just arrival time, but that's minor complaint.

I had the same problem, but found a free application called RotateScreen posted by tmz back in September 2008 (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...t=rotatescreen). I added RotateScreen to my Start Menu, so after I start Garmin I just click Start, then RotateScreen and I'm in landscape mode. When I'm finished using Garmin, I click Start, then RotateScreen again and I'm back to portrait mode.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

I've used Garmin XT, Destinator 7, and On course 5. By far I found that Garmin has been the best in terms of routing and time of arrival. Also like the fact that I can dowload other maps to my phone for trips outside of my normal travel. Currently have all of Canada and all of Eastern USA East of Mississippi and it's approx 1 GB. Looking to get Topo maps for mountain biking. Still run Destinator once in a while just for the Euopean flavour of announcing street names.

Re: TomTom 7 vs Garmin XT....which is better and why???

So how does Garmin handle traffic? Will it...

1) Route around it when you choose a destination?
2) Show the traffic when just driving around?
3) Notify you when you're heading into the traffic?
4) Give you directions around the traffic if you're driving towards it without a route planned?

Opening the keyboard is helpful with keeping the battery cool while charging + using GPS.

Dont use Gsen, Flipit, or Gyrator..... software that poll the G sensor just eat up battery life.

If you want to swap to horizontal mode just hold the talk button for 5 seconds, it should be set to that by default. If not you can set it within the Buttons section of Start > Settings.
