Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
I know, I know, there are a ton of threads talking about tethering!
However, I am really not that knowledgeable with smartphones and only figured out what tethering was after an hour and a half of searching ppcgeeks. I would like to get rid of my internet access at home - and hook my phone up to my laptop for internet access, since I already pay for internet access with Sprint. I would need to use a USB to do this because I really cannot even figure out how to use BT with my laptop. Is there anyone out there who can provide step by step instructions, or at least a link to step by step instructions? I really appreciate it - and, before someone sends a post telling me to SEARCH - I did! Perhaps it's my ignorance with the terms used but I would REALLY APPRECIATE a step by step for Noobs and Inexperienced people like me. THANKS A BUNCH! |
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
Use the USB cable and connect to your laptop via activesync. (Are you able to do that?) If you have windows xp its called activesync on your laptop if its vista its called Windows Mobile Device Center.. same purpose. You need to be connected this way. You don't have to establish a partnership (no need to sync items if you don't want.) When you conne t your phone to the pc a window comes up on your phone and you choose active sync or diskdrive.. you want to be sure to choose active sync. (be sure you have WMDC installed on your pc if you haven't already).
Be sure your wireless is turned off on laptop or ICS gets confused! Once you've successfully made this type of connection you need to go to your phone and scroll to programs. Choose Internet Connection Sharing program. Select USB for PC Connection box and Sprint for network connection box. Click Connect on bottom left... you may get a popup on the laptop the first time while drivers are installed. You may have to go to your laptop network connections windoow to select the phone.. just depends on phone and laptop but this should get you started.. Have you edited your registry to allow Internet Connection Setting? This is how I've edited mine: HKLM\Comm\InternetSettings in the key "Extension" I deleted the info. In the Settings folder I deleted the entire key that states "forcecellconnection" This way I have the drop down boxes as described above in ICS program.. choice of USB or Bluetooth, Choice of Phone as Modem or Sprint. |
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
1:Install the internet tethering hack http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment...9&d=1221879604 (thanks Swartz! Makes it easy for us noobs)
2:Make sure you have window mobile device center installed(Vista) or activsync(XP) So your computer has the proper drivers http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 3:Connect the usb cable to your phone. Then connect to your pc. 4:Wait for your pc to recognize and install the drivers for your phone(automatic if you followed step 2) You should see a notifacation in bottom right corner of your pc. 5: Select internet sharing from the popup when you plug the cable in. Or goto StartMenu/programs/internet sharing. When it starts hit connect in the bottom left corner if it hasn't already. Start up your favorite browser and enjoy :) |

Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
Thank You both sooooo much!
Just ONE more thing! Does this charge the phone at the same time so that I don't have to worry about running out of battery? Thanks again! |
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
How does it work for a mac?

About charging.. yes and no... you're charging but you're also depleting so it can be a wash depending on how much data you're transfering... I have never tried tethering for extended lengths at a time... though I know others do so you might read up on those type of posts.... heating can be an issue too. About mac.. I do not know but there are a few threads about tethering with mac. |
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
OKAY, so I just tried it....AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!
Woot-Woot! *happy!* Just a couple more questions: I first installed the cab that pjf357 provided the link to for the tethering. Is that what is providing the icon that says "Internet Sharing" or did that option come with the phone? Will I be charged an extra fee from Sprint for using the data? I currently have an unlimited data plan. Thanks so much for making this easy and giving me step by step instructions...you have no idea how grateful I am! |
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
Something everybody MUST know while getting these instructions here and executing them:
Technically speaking by doing this you are violating your Terms of Service contract which specifies that unless you're paying for a "Phone as Modem" or PAM plan you may not tether or otherwise share your devices internet connection with another device. They can tell by the type of usage when you are tethering, even with the registry hack. That said, typically unless you're abusing it (ie. going over 5GB/month) they will not bother you about it. As quoted by employees at a sprint store, they would rather keep you as a customer then argue with you over something like that. The ppl who have been contacted are usually just told that theyre supposed to be paying for the service and will have it added to their plan if they keep using it. So.... use at your own risk. There are a lot of threads with ppl talking about using it as their primary internet connection and using WAY more than 5GB/month and Sprint not doing anything about it. I personally use it as a backup connection when Cox is down. ...Just want you guys to be fully educated on the subject. :-D |

Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
Yep same here don't go crazy downloading huge files. It's great for casual browsing on the road or as a backup. I personally keep it to a minimum (under 5 gigs usually way less.) It is technically free but don't go poking the lion in the cage ;)

Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
OMG OP SEARCH!!!! lol...i'm j/k
From what I understand, or read anyways wmwifirouter allows you to do it without it being detected by sprint... not certain if it's true or not... Glad you could get it working btw... |

I haven't seen anyone that has been charged yet just don't do it while your roaming as they can cancel your contract. so... they could charge you but you'll have to play the odds. I have watched 2-3 movies a week with this method sence nov and they haven't said anything to me. |
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
d@mn yall are quick. Im gonna have to pick up my game here.
|
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
Agree with other posters in this thread. I would not advise you using this as your sole internet. Sprint can kick you off for abusing the network. I only use tethering if I am on a trip or if my home service is down.
|
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
They can detect you at any moment if you abuse this. ICS is not meant to be used as a primary internet connection but as a back up for casual light browsing. You are NOT paying for a household Internet connection, just for Internet usage from your phone.
The usage CANNOT be disguised by any software/hardware hacks. As long as you are using the Sprint servers they will detect it no matter what. No program will hide you. Use it, don't abuse it. Again, it is not meant to serve as primary Internet access. If people start abusing this, let's all kiss it good bye. Don't feel proud about it because you are "cheating" the system. It's like the insurance... Why do you think the deductible is going up to $100? Yes, abuse. |

Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
I installed the Internet Sharing on the Touch Diamond and have ActiveSync running, but when I run the Internet Sharing, it shows status as disconnected and the connect button in the bottom left is not clickable. What did I do wrong? This looks so easy, but just not working. Any help appreciated.

Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
you might try WMwifi router if you are comfortable with wireless in place of using bluetooth
|
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
1 Attachment(s)
If you're going to tether for extended periods, you may want to install the cab below. It will install nue's drivers that will allow your phone to charge faster when the battery capacity gets below ~80%

Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
I think when a coupe of you said you "dont think HE'LL ever be back on this thread" you may have been talking about me, Dales WIFE, and certainly don't plan on abusing this feature. I did state that I plan on disconnecting my home internet (in my initial post), but that's because I use my internet at home only about 2x per week for less than 20 minutes each time, no downloading of movies, songs, etc. Personally, I don't think that's "abusing" Sprint and look forward to canceling $56 worth of comcast internet charges for such little use.
I do thank you all for your help getting it working, and for taking the time to explain things to me that I did not understand (especially the difference between what I downloaded and what was in the programs area when I purchased the phone.) THANKS AGAIN! |
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
sorry about that DalesWife and im sure that for what your useing it for you will be ok and from the saving money point a verry happy camper. glad you got this sorted out and hopefully we did help you out.

Well I've been tethering since my 6700, so...many many years and never had a problem, of course I try not to use too many GB's.
Here's my current usage I'm about 2 weeks into my billing period, as you can see it's been a slow month. http://g.imagehost.org/0095/sprintt.jpg |

Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
i just got my touch pro yesterday and have tried the ICS fix, and it does not work. The connect button is greyed out and cant use. Do i have to do the regedit for this instead of running the ICS fix? i switched backk to my mogul for now, because i am unable to to this. thanks for all the help!
|
Re: Simple Instructions for Tethering Touch Pro on Sprint
Follow up to my previous post....the connection setting say sprint, not phone as a modem, so i know that part is right, but still a greyed out connecion icon?
Thanks all! |
