Phone isn't muting when plugging in headphone

When I plug my headphone into my Touch Pro, I hear the music through my headphones but the speaker on my phone keeps playing. Is there a setting that tells the phone to mute the speaker when a headphone is plugged in? (There's a headphone icon in the top bar of the today screen so I know the phone recognizes that a headphone is plugged in.)
*edit* there is a significant difference in volume in the phone's speaker but still loud enough where I can't listen in private without the person sitting next to me being able to hear
