In Abilene: Sprint 1x, Alltel EVDO

I live in an area where Sprint has 1x signal and Alltel has EVDO. Sometimes when my phone goes into roam, it picks up the Alltel EVDO and I am able to browse the internet using the EVDO speeds, I called Sprint and I'm not charged extra for using data while in roam.
Does anyone know of a way I can force my data to stay in roam so I can have EVDO speeds? I've been inquiring about when EVDO will be available in my area and I've been told for over two years "soon".
Looking forward to a hack to get me some EVDO love.
