Re: Using Tom Tom in the US

TomTom is far inferior to Iguidance in the US market. Map data on TomTom is a number of years out of date (despite the more recent map dates posted). Text to speech, voice prompts are delayed or non existant.

If you are worried about the new iguidance DRM locking you to an 8GB microsd card, buy Iguidance 4.0 with all the TTS abilities and none of the DRM rubbish.

TomTom's maps are updated annually the only bad thing is that you have to buy them.

Re: Using Tom Tom in the US

I'm actually familiar with iGuidance, I was looking into it years ago when weighing alternatives for my Pocket PC (before the era of all PPCs being phones).

The reason I didn't buy it is that Mapopolis had the same features, including Text-To-Speech and more updated maps than Tom Tom, but was a fraction of the price.

Now that Mapopolis is no longer in business, I'm re-evaluating Tom Tom. To be honest, years ago Tom Tom's maps were the worst of the big GPS apps, but as of recently they are using the same map source as iGuidance, so the maps should be just as accurate.
The only thing I'd be losing by going Tom Tom is the lack of TTS, which coming from Mapopolis *IS* something I'll miss.
However, iGuidance is still on the expensive side (about as much as a stand alone GPS unit would cost!). Therefore, back to Tom Tom and my questionable ability to purchase maps.

To be honest, after downloading Tom Tom home, it looks like I CAN purchase the US maps for the version 7 it detected on my phone.
Still, since only one person seemed to know that, I wonder how many of us here are using legit maps...

Hmm. dunno. I have the maps that I purchased last summer when I was going to the UK and needed them for my Tilt - Got UK and US maps. I have a tt6 cab that installed without issue. It syncs with the PC My Tom Tom? whatever its called and then transfers over the maps, which tt6 then sees.

Sorry I can't be any more help then that. It might not be possible to use that version of TT6? Do you have any idea what version number it is?

Re: Using Tom Tom in the US

Tom Tom 6 and 7 Both Work on the Touch Pro. I've used even IGuidance 4.0 which I happily removed for Tom Tom6 back when I was using the xv6700 due to the inferior 3D graphics and Mapping. I'm currently using Tom Tom7 and Boyyyy is it worlds apart. The Graphics are Sick and The Features Leaps and Bounds. No more passing POI's and seeing Generic Icons. Now you know if the resteraunt or Gas station you are approaching is McDonalds or Chevron. For Tom Tom7 the app it's self does appear to be map specific. But if anyone wants to Try Tom Tom 7 with Maps ( North America )I can point you in the right direction just pm me.
