Help! Touch screen not working after hard reset

I was having some issues with my sprint touch pro being slow so I decided to do a hard reset of my phone. After hard reset, I tried to restore my data with PIM backup but it failed because I didn't have gmail set up yet. After canceling out of that, the touchscreen stopped working (buttons continued to work). After figuring out how to hardware hard reset, I found that the touch screen still did not work after hard reset (stuck on align screen). After numerous hard resets to the same effect, I called sprint and had my ESN swapped to an old phone. It was then that the touch screen started working again. Why did this problem happen and how do I fix it when it happens again?
Thanks!
