Portable GPS

Guys....Help me please. I am torn as to what type of portable GPS system I should buy. Money is not an issue...I have been looking at the Garmin 880 and a few of the higher end TomToms.

I want to use the internet connectivity of my Sprint Touch Pro.

Does anyone know which of the GPS units are the best of the best??

Re: Portable GPS

Why not just use the GPS in the Pro?

Re: Portable GPS

I have used NAV units for years & I would DEFINITELY recommend you buy a Garmin unit.

I own six standalone NAV units & also have GarminXT & CoPilot Live 7 in my TouchPro. If you need advice, feel free to PM me.

Re: Portable GPS

I bought the Garmin 880 for my girlfriend and she loves it. Pretty slick unit. Works great.

Re: Portable GPS

I like to have the GPS on all the time. I like to be able to search and "play" with the stand alone units. This is why I'd rather keep my phone out of it. However....I want to be able to use the DATA of my phone for possibly updating the "traffic" and "weather" information. This is my dilemma. TOMTOM's will do this...but the Garmin's are better and they do not do this. Oy vey!!

Re: Portable GPS

I use TT7 on my TP, and love it. And I can do calls and data while GPS is on (but not data AND calls at the same time of course).

Otherwise, don't know, I have a Garmin Standalone that I did like, but I don't use it anymore since I got the TP...

While on a call, the TT7 is still running in the foreground, so I can still view the map.

I am not sure about data, I have to put TT7 in the background, where it is still running, to use something like livesearch, but it still works great. I have not used traffic or update with TT7 yet so I cannot comment on that.

What model Tom Tom does this? I'd like to look into this.

Edit - Never mind, went to tomtom.com and found out.

Re: Portable GPS

GarminOnline works with Garmin on my TP. Gives me local fuel prices, weather, traffic, etc.

Re: Portable GPS

+1 for GarminXT w/2009 maps, but I have found the Telenav (SprintNav) sometimes has more road detail (farm to market & dirt roads) where I routinely have to visit on the job. If you have Sprint's unliminted data plan, SprintNav is included. If you have other carrier, I highly recommend GarminXT. It has more features than the stand-alone Nuvi's because of the online capabilities of your phone as Baffles post above indicates. Maps are identical to Garmin's stand-alone units.

Peace.
