You need to change the settings for voice command.
Go to Start menu-->Settings-->Personal--Voice Command. Select messaging from the list and click on Options. Uncheck High priority messages only. Then it should read all your text messages. The reason it was only reading your friends was that maybe that your friends text message was sent as High priority. p.s. Welcome to the forum.
