VZW Text Message Size Limits?
(Ok, I already searched the forum, and didn't see this addressed earlier)
Do any of the ROM's eliminate the 160 character limit on text messages? According to my call into Verizon, it is not them, but the phone manufacturer. We conferenced in HTC, and they agreed that it was how the phone was programed, but they said there was no way around it. Surely one of the enterprising people on this site gets as frustrated as I do with this limit.... (my previous Verizon (non-pda) phone had a limit of 1000 characters). Any help? Or am I beyond help? ken |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
There are a few threads floating around here about this...But have a look at this site http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsu...haracters.html

The HTC guy said it was thier phone, but reading that other thread makes it seem like it is a WM issue. Frustrated. ken |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
Actually all phones have 160 character limit. However, my phone will break them into multiple messages if I go over the limit.

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
Ken,
I've talked to a verizon service tech and he stated that its a network issue..I tested this out by having my girlfriend send me a text over 160 characters from her LG env. I got the first 160 characters and a second text saying "preceding msg modified, media objects removed". She got a text back saying "Message Delivered to *phonenumber* as plain text Destination does not support Enhanced Messaging Service" So I had a friend with a Sprint Touch Pro send me a text over 160 characters and I got the first 160 in 1 text and the remaining message is a second one. |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
Yah my old WM5 Treo would split incoming messages fine. TP doesn't do that and it drives me crazy. Funny thing is my Treo would stop me from sending messages over 160 but my TP will auto split it into 2 or more messages if needed. Win some lose some i guess

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
I had a i760 from Verizon and had the same problem.. so here is the deal. After talking with many techs here is how it works.
As everyone knows, SMS is limited to 160 characters per message. EMS is required to be able to receive messages larger than 160 characters broken up. Most non-PDA phones support EMS. Some PDA phones (notably Blackberry/Palm) generally support EMS whereas most Windows Mobile based devices do not support EMS. Whether this has to do with Verizon's device profile or with the phone itself I don't know.. but here is what happens in the practical sense in my experience. Outbound - you CAN send more than 160 characters to any phone EXCEPT windows mobile based phones on VZW Inbound - you CAN receive more than 160 characters from phones that are not on VZW's network. You CANNOT receive more than 160 characters from any device on VZW's network. The reason behind this - or so I'm told - is that in general the carrier's will break up messages themselves in the interchange.. but if you're going VZW to VZW you never hit this interchange and are now reliant on your device profile within the system. I have not found a workaround. |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
I'm not sure if there is a registry setting for this on the Pro, but on my wife's Treo 800w I had to do this:
Increase SMS limit from 1 to 10 messages. HKLM\software\palm\varnish\messaging\sms MaxPartsPerMsg to 10 (from 1) This would take the max characters from 160 to 1,600... There may be something similar in there? |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
I'm going to try it right now on my TP. I'll report back in a few.

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
The problem is that VZW's network supports messages longer than 160 characters, without splitting. It's a bit of an oddity because they are the only network that does this. The accepted norm is just to split the messages at 160 characters. I can't say for messages longer than 160 characters sent from VZW to other carriers... all of my friends have VZW but I'm the only one to go ahead and type long messages and mine are split on the phone (same while I was using Helio -- Sprint's network anyway).
I'm fairly sure it's a possibility at this point that WinMo doesn't support incoming messages longer than 160 characters (again, VZW is the weird one, the only network that supports longer SMS messages) which is why you get a split message saying the media objects were removed. |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
Thats a no go. There is nothing in the registry called "MaxPartsPerMsg".

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
160 character is the max that be sent in one "pulse" across the networks without any need for bandwidth considerations (Don't ask me why, I just follow the tech blogs that follow this kinda stuff :) ). Anyways, vzw prolly doesn't care because their network is so large but they do it by default to avoid ticking off the other carriers. Just because they have the capability doesn't mean that they have to use it.

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
Has this issue been resolved? I was able to make the change on my 800W; however, I have not found how to do this on my Sprint Touch Pro (multiple messages/160). Thank you.

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
As far as I know this issue is still ongoing.

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
i have the sprint touch pro and i'm only getting the first 160. they're not being split into multiple parts. is that what you sprint peeps are experiencing?

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
I will just chime in here real quick.....
WinMo breaks any messgae over 160 chars to multipl messages. Some phones dont receivnet he multiples very well. I have tested this aned explained how ti all works in the exact same thread that was started two weeks ago.I also posted screenshots in that thread. If youre receiver is not getting all of the message.. tell them to get a WInMO phone or call VZW. Its not the sender...... Trust me on this guys. If I can find the duplicate to this thread I will dig up the screenshots of what I mean.... |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
Scott you are correct..WinMo phone to WinMo phone will break it into 2 messages. BUT a NON-WinMo phone to a WinMo phone will not break it into 2 messages.

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
If you send a picture mail with no picture, you can send 1000 charictors, with a subject.

I text my gf all the time and she has a t mobile sidekick and she sends long text messages..and they're always split up. Same with my messages that are over 160 characters. I've been able to do this on EVERY PHONE I've had (from the i730 to the xv6700, to the xv6800 and the sprint tp on vzw network) and the sidekick is a lot of things (coughs crap) but not a wm phone. |

When they both had enV's they could send 800 word texts with no problem & they came in one piece & always arrived. Now, if my son & I text back & forth & get long winded (I have a TouchPro) we get the two or three part texts with no problem. Send that exact same text from her enV to my son & he only gets the first part of a multi-part message every single time. ~John |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
By the way, if this is NOT true I would love to know how to fix it.
I have speant hours researching it, gone up to tier two tech support with vz & filled out a trouble ticket all to no avail. ~John |

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
I'm thinkin about going back into the store and talking to them again to see if they are making any progress with it. The guy did say its a known issue and they are working on it.

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
By the way, one day when I was bored at work I got a tier 2 vz tech on the phone & we talked for almost 2 hours.
He kept saying "there's GOT to be a fix for this!!". I was hoping he was right (but pretty sure he was wrong), but in the end we both gave up on it. The guy was a GREAT guy & he gave me his private # & asked me if I ever found a fix for it to call him personally & tell him what it was. ~John |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
I have to agree with you that they were great on trying to fix my problem. But like you said in the end we gave up...I hope there is a fix for this in the near future.

I only read the first two pages of this thread, but I'm amazed I didn't see the clear answer in the first two pages...
SMS is limitd to 160 chars in the specification. The 1000 limit message you are talking about is MMS and not SMS. SMS = Text Message MMS = Picture Message http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_message_service http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multime...saging_Service Read up.... |
Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
lol thats not even what the problem is bro. And yes I do know the difference between SMS and MMS..Thanks though

Re: VZW Text Message Size Limits?
So.. I started another thread similar to this, but I'm going to jump in on this one too. I've got Alltel and a Touch Pro. My girlfriend, on Alltel too, can't send me multi-part SMS. She will get back a message saying my phone doesn't support EMS, and I get the message saying that the preceding message was modifiedd, and media content was stripped. However, when someone from another carrier sends me a long message all the parts come through fine.
So I've come to the conclusion this is a mix of a change on the messaging center for the carriers (seems only the CDMA carriers are having trouble with it) and something in WinMo itself, and something recent too, as I have only found reports of it happening on 6/6.1. It may be we need to create a registry key for it; looking at HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Inbox/SVC/SMS/MsgClasses it has entries for Flix, Pix, and SMS. I know didly about what each entry does, or if it has anything to do with it, but hey, ya never know. Could you guys from Verizon and Sprint check and see what entries you have listed? I really love this phone and all it can do, but having SMS conversations with longer than 160 characters is pretty much a needed thing. If we could find a fix for this it would be awesome; Alltel has apparently taken the stance of not being able/willing to do anything about fixing it. |
