Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Oh good God, I hadn't even noticed LOL. I just sit at work waiting for something to do. I'm a software developer and right now we're transitioning projects. As soon as I get told to do something I do it, but right now it's pretty slow LOL.

I have no life

You would think the stores here would have to have extra covers

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

I got my black dye from Joann Crafts for $1.46. Go Joann!

It really looks awesome. Even my wife was impressed with the outcome more than me not ruining it. I did follow the heated water/15 minute directions.

Also, I got a free extra one from a local Sprint Repair center and stuck it in my shirt pocket and put my phone in there with it. When I got back to the office the new one had black scuff marks on it. I tried rubbing it off, but it didn't work. I also tried cleaning the dyed one more, but I don't want to see if it scuffs the new one again. That's my backup copy.

The cover did fit noticeably better. Nice and tight. I think I might heat up the backup so it'll be tight.

I did have some issues with my lens area, but it doesn't seem to effect the pictures too much, but I'd rather it not have the anomalies.

Here is what it looks like inside the lens area:

And a picture I took with the cover on:

And another of the same bottle with it off:

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Wow...I'm glad the thread is back up. I was posting my own results and some observations when I discovered it'd been closed. I followed cforster's directions. Here were my observations:

1) Temperature: just when tiny bubbles start to form on the bottom of the pan and float to the top. This just to an almost-too-warm-to-touch temperature. I used low heat for gradual control. I just turned off the heat and stirred in the dye, mixing for 2 minutes. Oh yes...I used NO salt.
2) I used stainless steel medium saucepan and stainless steel spoon. Easy cleanup, no stain or residue. No matter WHAT you use, I recommend you ALWAYS use some newspaper or drop cloth in your work area. The dye is water soluable but VERY messy to clean up.
3) Constantly stirred for the 15 minutes. Hard to do with the cover bobbing up and down in the water so in order not to keep whacking it, I just put the spoon all the way to the botton and kept it along the sides of the pan in a nice, slow, circular motion.
4) Tiny little bubbles formed on the cover that look like they'd stick. THIS IS NORMAL. They aren't permanent.
5) Early in the cooking, I noticed the cover took on a purple-ish colour. Sure indication that it needs to be in there longer.
6) When done, I noticed how streaky and spotty the dye looked after rinsing. THIS IS NORMAL and will improve easily with buffing. Buffing is important!
7) I buffed using a soft, older terry t-shirt. Just buffed until ALL of the little streaks were gone. Got a really smooth finish. Paid close attention to the edges around the cover and the lens cover. I let it sit and dry for a while before putting it on my phone, for what it was worth.

I'm very pleased with the results and I'm glad I took the plunge! =D> Here are my before-and-after shots. I used black dye. It goes nicely with the bezel and the keyboard colours.

WOW...WHERE are you folks finding the dye for well under $2??? Oh, that's right...I'm in northern CALIFORNIA! I paid $3.18 plus sales tax at Rite Aid.

Nice cover! I couldn't help but notice how nice and un-scratched your lens cover is. Mine is scratched from laying on hard surfaces etc. This is probably the one gripe I have about the phone body itself. Why not a RECESSED lens cover so that whenever you set the phone down on a hard surface the clear cover doesn't get scratched?

Good point... and what are those specs on the glass? Is that from the dying process?

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Hi I'm brand new to the forum, and just bought a Sprint Touch Pro on Friday.

I'm pretty handy and artistic, so i figured i could tackle this. And here are some tips from an artistic stand point. I wanted a dark blueish grey cover and a leather brown cover. I used navy blue (came out purpleish black) and dark brown (didnt have regular brown) with a touch of scarlet.

Seems like whatever color i used the there was a red tint. (navy blue came out dark purple)
also the dark colors (dark brown, and navy blue) really do come out dark to get the correct color
