I didn't believe this was true - that certain mini usb's wouldn't work for syncing, but I just checked with 2 retractables I own.

An insten retractable that I bought from EBAY 2 years ago for $5 works like a charm.

An etech retractable I bought fromt the Dollar Tree for a buck, only works for charging. - though I've used it to transfer files from/to other devices.

I thought the mini usb spec was standard.

I should add to this thread - that 5 pins is apparently not enough to buy the right mini usb. I bought two more, that unfortunately don't work for me! Fortunately, they only cost me $2.50.

I compared them to the one I have that DOES work for syncing - and as someone else pointed out, that one from Insten, has 3 wires. The non working ones all have 2.

Unfortunately, in listings I only see vendors distinguish between 5 and 4 pin. Not about number of wires. So you've got to go with brands and types that people have reported to work.

Got mine at the dollar store. I should have bought a bunch when the store here had them. They disappeared quick. And yes, it syncs no problem.
