Ok, so now what if I'm out and about. Can I connect to my computer's ip the same way or is that an entirely other subject?

If I were you I'd just use Orb. You can essentially setup a server that hosts all your media files. I believe you can even setup directories to browse through all the file types and download to your phone. I haven't used it in a couple years though.

That is entirely another subject but you can use Orb to connect when you aren't at home
