anyway to make my Tp work always on 1X?

ok i just got sprint ive been along time gsm ppc user from the days of the sx66. anyways what are the benfits or negtive effects of forcing your phone to 1x only? at my house i have about a bar or two of evdo but when i make a phone call it shoots up to full bars of 1x. im assuming that its the same as forcing your phone to a gsm signal only meaning slower data speed but a stronger signal. when i had my att phone it would be the same sometimes 2 bars of 3g (wcdma)but if i forced it to gsm i would have full bars
so other than the slower speed what effects will i get by forcing it to 1x only?
