Re: Touch Pro Build Date

Is there any way to infer a build date, relatively speaking, from something on the box, like the SN or MEID? For example, if I ask them to give me the one with the highest serial or MEID on the box, am I likely to be getting the newest one they have? I know that doesn't guarantee me any particular build date, but it'd be nice if there'd be some way to generally figure out which is the newest in their inventory without having to open one, boot it up, and see the build date through ##786#.

Re: Touch Pro Build Date

10/13 -> 10/12 -> 10/14 -> 11/7 -> 11/7 -> 11/6

Hopefully 6th time's a charm. So far the build quality is pretty good, although the two halves of the phone don't perfectly line up. Not something I would return it for, but my last phone's dpad was falling off!

Hoping that this doesn't have the heat/charging issues. I am going to try GPS on a 2-hour trip today.

note: this 11/6 is noticably more sluggish than my second 11/7, and the Diamond I have on my desk. I guess I will turn to a custom ROM, even though they usually have really annoying settings enabled by default. Nothing pisses me off more than the display turning off automatically by g-sensor... I find that over half my phone calls are to automated touch-tone systems, and having the phone turn off every few seconds is irritating...

Also, my screen is highly insensitive around the edges... I can BARELY enter a 1 on the secondary keyboard, (for pin/pw/etc.)

Re: Touch Pro Build Date

Wow, you have a lot of bad luck! My 11/6 is great to me (or maybe I have lowered my expectations based on owning so many HTC devices). I can even get about two days out of the battery if I'm not too heavy on the data (Living in Overland Park has its coverage advantages). I did find it sluggish, though - especially when rotating the screen. I fixed everything using Advanced Config, so that I wouldn't have to use a custom ROM, and I was able to add touchwheel functionality to programs like the contact list using it as well.

I switched from a 10/13 to a 10/24 and its faster and the battery lasts waaay longer. I used it for 14 hrs and still have 60%. The device is more solid as well, doesnt wiggle when in the closed position. I returned mine within 30 days at bestbuy, no questions asked.

Re: Touch Pro Build Date

OK, I am on Touch Pro #4 from Best Buy. Let me also add that I have never had an issue with a phone in the last 10 years. Maybe I was lucky, or maybe HTC needs some better quality control.

First one: Purchased on first day of sales, build date 10/12
Outcome: returned due to crack on side of case, near slide rest, where there is a rubber stopper. Not sure how this happened, but it was never dropped or abused.

Second one: Build date 10/12
Outcome: Horrible audio crackling, not fixable with audio hacks

Third one: Build date 10/15
Outcome: Had low audio, but fixable with audio hacks. Everything else was fine, except voice calls were horrible, data was intermittent, and battery life was about 50% less than previous phones. I am guessing a radio problem was causing the battery life issue.

Fourth One: Build date 11/7
Outcome: Everything works great, physical build quality is better, and voice calls and data work great. Battery life is best of all 4. Surprisingly better.

Hopefully nothing goes wrong with this one. It is a great phone, but marginally worth the effort of having to return it for a 4th copy.

Re: Touch Pro Build Date

Well, there's also a sort of early-adopter penalty that comes with ANY new thing. It's just like buying a car in its first model year (which I have also done), or an operating system in its first release (guilty). You get some good with some bad. It's not quality control issues, it's just that anything this complicated is going to have problems to work out. The testing phase on these devices is exceedingly short, and some problems will make it into the first production run. Later runs are almost always better. If you saw how many problems are fixed in the few weeks between hand-built pre-production phones and the mass-produced pubic release, you'd be amazed they work at all sometimes .

For example, a friend of mine is testing the new iDEN Blackberry. They're hoping that the new ROM will fix the ability to send and receive SMS. The first release didn't have any SMS capability. The second only works with other iDEN phones. This is just how it goes with smartphone production - it's nothing new or unique to HTC.

Re: Touch Pro Build Date

10/16 phone from bestbuy: problems
11/7 phone exchanged by bestbuy: no problems

If you have one of the original first batch of phones you might want to exchange it if you have any of the list problems in this thread.

Re: Touch Pro Build Date

Does anyone with the original batches such as build dates as of 10-19-08 have a problem where when the the keyboard is closed it moves? Almost like you can twist it. My build date is 10-19-08. I do know that in the mornings when I go to work and take the train. I will stream some audio on a podcast and check some mail and check out a couple of websites. When I get to work I still have 4 bars of battery left, but by like 1 I would have only 1 bar left in the battery if it has not died at all.

It does get a warm (sometimes hot on the low side) when I get on the internet and such. Does anyone think I should exchange it. I got mine on 11-4-08. No problem with audio or anything like that. Even with the keyboard closed it is still flushed.
