I thought I had read somewhere that it was a multicolor ring... not 100% sure now though....

Also, shouldn't that light sensor turn my screen off when it's next to my face? Cause it don't :-p

lol no, it adjusts the light based on the surrounding light available. WOn't turn the phone off though. If you cover it with your finger it should dim a bit and then brighten up when you release. This only works though if you have auto adjust backlight checked in settings/power
