I had the same question about the data plan. The page before the rebate shows what plan that you need to get the rebate, but the rebate itself says nothing about it. I talked to the EVP rep, and he stated that the rebate is for the device and it does not matter which plan you have. As far a renewing your contract. Do it now, it does not reset you device credit and any new contract within will go back to the same date. I have renewed my contract 2x and gotten 2 credits.

If you look closely on the right hand side of the first page of the MIR form (see link below) under the heading for Smart Devices, you will see the following statement:
"Unless data is included in your plan, requires data plan of $25 or higher." http://www.nextel.com/assets/pdfs/en...mir_110108.pdf |
