ISM stands for "Industrial, Scientific and Medical". It refers to several radio bands left "unlicensed" due to several issues.
The 2.4GHz ISM band is being made available "unlicensed" due to noise radiated from devices, the most common being microwave ovens. It's also becoming useful for technologies such as Wireless LANs, Bluetooth, cordless telephones, baby monitors, security monitoring, and several other applications using spread spectrum technology.

I am not sure exactly why they are different amounts on the phones, but Verizon has more. My thoughts are it is due to the different chip sets. Here's to hoping the 7501 handles video better than the 7500.
