First things first, depending on the computer you are using, (I'm assuming XP) sync through Activesync. That will back up your files you may have saved, contacts, bookmarks, calendar, ect. Look through the phone and write down any programs you use, that you would want on the next Rom. Chances are they will already be there when you flash.

The activesync is a big deal for anyone just getting started with flashing, as it's easy to use, free, and allows for a connection between the pc and phone for the update to happen.

Personally, for pure stability, ease of use, and working perfectly right off the bat, download one of the SKI-ROMs. I'm partial to RootRom myself, and I would suggest trying his too. I've had great luck with both.

Also, go to that upgrades section and download a factory SHIPPED rom from the stickies section of the forum. Direct link should be ----> HERE.

The reason is we do not know what exact ROM is on there right now, and it's best in that case to flash back to a stock, original Rom first, to make sure all the settings that the new Rom puts on the phone are correct.

Flashing in itself is pretty straightforward. Connect to the phone through Activesync. When it says connected, just run the .exe file from the shipped rom. Allow it to finish and reboot itself, and run through all the factory setups.

When all done, connect to activesync again, and run the CustomRUU exe file from the cooked rom of your choice. Let that run through all customizations, and have fun. Try a few out. Take 'em for test drives. Got questions? Just ask. Preferably though, ask specific questions about specific Roms in the thread that you downloaded the Rom from. Those threads are populated by users and the cooks that know the Roms inside and out.

Welcome to the addiction.

Seriously though, read the stickies in the CDMA upgrades section too. Don't just jump in. I have some good directions, but it's your responsibility to not turn your phone into a brick.
