You could try doing a hard reset and see if that solves most of your speed issues...
As for the hardware being cranky that is not uncommon with the TP...
It is not a phone that takes a lot of abuse!

umm, ok.. asside from overheating the cpu the tp1 took an awefull lot of abuse from me, just like mogul and the apache before it. survived many a fall without any case..
