Guys, I've come up with a cab that fixes the issue on custom ROMs. It should work on any Sprint Touch Pro running a custom ROM. I don't know if it will work on any other phone, as I only have a Sprint Touch Pro to try it on.

This is a real fix, it uses the time that the message was sent by the other person, not the time the message was received by your phone (which is what ziggy's workaround does).

It will not fix your existing messages. To do that, run the CorrectSMSDate program found in the first post here. However, the CorrectSMSDate program stopped working for me for some reason on March 1, so I've come up with a quick and easy way to do it manually (much easier than the directions in the post I linked to), let me know if you want to know it.

lol so lets assume my buddy has a stock tp and i have a custom. per your fix, the message time and date will reflect his time and date. so if he doesn't have the fix installed, it will still show as 2016?

why does no one likes ziggys?

Re: 2016 Official Fix Released from HTC (SPRINT)

My fault for poor explanation. It uses the time that Sprint's servers register the text being sent. So even if your friend's phone thinks it's 2016, your phone will be able to correctly interpret the time Sprint's servers are reporting if you have my fix.

Basically, it does the same thing that the official fix does, except it works on custom ROMs.

ziggy's is less than ideal because it uses your phone's local time as the timestamp. So, if your phone is off and your friend sends you a text at 8PM, but then you turn your phone on the next morning at 10AM, your phone will timestamp the text at 10AM instead of 8PM like it should be (and like my fix does).

I'm thinking a new sticky and every WM blog in the internets should have this info... Not one single custom rom that I know of even has this fix... and sprints fix doesn't even seem to work on sprint's rom half the time.

Just tried this fix on my own cooked rom and it worked perfectly and I'm on Alltel

Thanks guys, cool to hear it works on Alltel. If anyone else has had success with it, let me know!

And since hellonwheels mentioned that Sprint's own fix doesn't work on stock Sprint ROMs sometimes... My fix should work on stock Sprint ROMs too, so feel free to try it if you're on a stock Sprint ROM and the official fix doesn't work for you.

I would love to know this method; I got the "CorrectSMSDate Failed!" message too. It seems to have corrected most of them, but not all. This is after I had to backup with SpriteBackup, hard reset to install the new Sprint ROM, which was required by the Sprint Patch to fix the 2016 bug, and then restore with Sprite.

I like quick and easy... and I'd rather not hard reset for a third time.

smarties10000, see my new topic here. The directions for my method of fixing existing texts are at the bottom.
