Railslave,
You should post a thread in the apps section for waze and spread the word! It looks cool. Im giving it a download now. I clicked the thanks button for suggesting it.

Re: How to configure your GPS for No Lag !!

sadly your first post isnt true...

hard reset, stock Sprint, nothing modified, installed Google Maps... Use GPS...

NADA... doesnt work... at all... complete crap...

did the following as posted in another post:
Code:
(Tested & provided by DGH)
A. With Advanced config nel menu GPS
disable A-GPS
disable GPS logging
logfile name must be empty
old logfile name must be empty
maximum size of logfile must be 0
delete the files :
\windows\GPSLogFile.txt and \windows\GPSLogFileBack.txt

With those changes car usage will be quite perfect

B. Then edit registry
Under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\
Drivers\GpsOneDevice\PollInterval -> 100 (default is 1000)
Drivers\InputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
Drivers\OutputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
Drivers\SleepOnNoData -> 100 (default is 1000)
Multiplexer\MaxBufferSize -> 512 (by default not present, you have to create it)
With those tweaks pedestrian usage will be much better but not perfect.
and it now works perfectly!

sadly this is NOT only a problem with other GPS Apps... even Sprint Navigation has issues sometimes...

Re: How to configure your GPS for No Lag !!

Yeah, I guess the biggest deal here is what people accept as OK. From the TP to the TP2, GPS has sucked on both. If you have ever used a Garmin or in car nav system, you will see what most are saying here. I can't argue how fast the GPS sats update or pole, or how the stand alone systems make it with no lag. I also understand I own a phone, and not a handheld GPS. So I'm not bashing HTC or the service. But, still I don't understand why from the factory that the lag can't be delt with and fixed so to be usable.

Going down the road at 60mph, 200ft is NOT acceptable. 200ft is is 2/3rds of a freakin football field. Again, this is not a deal breaker, but is aggrevating. Using our in car system, it is dead on, to a T. So I know its possible. Im gonna try Kanes suggestins above and see how that goes.

And sorry OP, I got a chuckle from the first post. Title of thread "How to configure GPS for no Lag". Step 1: Google Maps: DO NOTHING!!! Thought it was kinda funny. Thanks for the tips though.

Re: How to configure your GPS for No Lag !!

Okay, what version of Garmin XT are folks running? I suspect some are running Version 4, others Version 5... I found the Version 4 was every bit as fast as a Nuvi... After I upgraded to 5, I found a slight lag, but not enough to matter...

Re: How to configure your GPS for No Lag !!

I am running Garmin XT 5 on latest NRG ROM. A couple of ROMs ago I installed/configured GPSGate per instructions, and it "seemed" like it was helping a bit with the lag. However, on the past two ROM revisions I am simply unabable to launch Garmin if GPSGate is running - any ideas?

Has anyone had good luck with XDA driver fix?

Re: How to configure your GPS for No Lag !!

I think the Garmin issues are a different problem and complicating things a bit here. I see a lot of folks claiming they can't run Garmin at all on various ROMs.

I finally bothered to look at how much "Program" memory is being used and left by various applications.

iGuidance goes from 63mb free to 57mb free not bad for such a large app.
Opera 10 Beta 2 goes from 62mb free to 32mb free (holy crap what a piggy).

I'm curious what Garmin 4 vs 5 uses. I suspect it's one of the piggies and the TP2 may be low on resources and swapping a lot and is causing Garmin to lag.

There has been quite a few threads about leaking memory too on various ROMs.

Try driving down a football field at 60mph. It will take you only about 3 seconds.

Car systems may animate graphics between updates better than some WM Nav software.

I never had a problem with update rate with Mapolis or iGuidance on the 6 WM phones (older ones with external GPS of course).

You'd be surprised how large an exit ramp is if you actually measured it.

iGuidance gives me plenty of warning on the highway or back roads on the TP2.
I usually slow down for the exit when it tells me

The GPS system itself is limited to 1 update per second. But there are GPS units with compasses and accelerometers that interpolate. But even an update once every 2 seconds seems to work fine for me.

Re: How to configure your GPS for No Lag !!

Here is something I did back in the TP1 days and TomTom that had worked. I will try it here tomorrow to see how it helps with Garmin on TP2.

On the Com port in GPS settings, change baud rate to at least tripe i.e. 19200. See if that helps. Default is too low.

Before you start flaming, GPS chip DOES have a COM port and windows API is simply sharing it. Ever thought about the effects of paralleling a Serial connection. You simply cannot. So Windows is using interrupts. Increasing the baud rate should help!

Before I eat my own words, I just changed the setting on my phone and will try it out tomorrow.

Also, for the second try, change Garmin to COM4 if the first setting alone does not work. Dont worry, it wont make any difference. USing API or COM4 means same thing as long as you dont use too many apps that use GPS chip at the same time, which I doubt anyone does.

Good luck and please report any feedback.
