VERIZON users on Custom Rom's - annoying voice-only network notification??
 

I'm looking to get a better handle on who else is having this problem.

If you are a Verizon TP2 user and load a Custom ROM (I use MightyROM but I have seen other ROM's like Juicy referenced for the same issue) what happens when you roam outside of EVDO coverage areas (By ROAMING I mean no longer on VZW towers)

I get this really annoying pop up message every few seconds that says the following:

The entire screen dims and this message pops up to the top, which means you must get rid of it to do anything else on the phone. The message will continue to come up every few seconds, forcing you to constantly OK this message in order to use the phone.. but realistically this makes the phone unusable. No one has yet found a way to disable this notification.

This doesn't appear to be unique to a particular ROM.. therefore my theory is there is something amiss with the kitchens being used to create these ROM's.

In either case, on the stock Verizon ROM you have three options, Automatic A, Automatic B, and Home Only. On the custom ROM's there appear to be only two options, Standard and Home Only. I don't know if this is the smoking gun or not, but what I do know is that using custom ROM's on the original Touch Pro, I had three options for Network Service but all the Touch Pro 2 ROM's seem to have only the two.

If you are affected by this, you won't know until you roam out of EVDO coverage and into 1x territory. I got surprised by it when trying to use my phone for GPS, which this stupid message basically stopped me from being able to do. As it stands now, if I had to use the phone as GPS again in the near future, I would have to flash back to stock. I have tried hard resetting my device and tried a couple of ROM's while in the problem area and they all have the same symptom - this was with nothing installed except the carrier provisioning CAB, fresh from a hard reset. I have also confirmed that I do NOT get this message with stock ROM.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm not getting anywhere in the Custom ROM threads and there were a couple of threads about it here in the main section but they quickly got buried. I'm guessing that since you don't see the problem until you roam, and EVDO coverage is so good, the TP2 is so new, as is the ability to flash it, that perhaps there aren't THAT many people who have actually seen this error yet.. but I'd love to get this fixed or get an idea what's causing it so there is at least a workaround. I'd hate for someone to get an ugly surprise like I did.

I'm not personally having this problem cause I'm pretty much engulfed by VZW towers but I know what he's talking about.

What he said. TO BE CLEAR, I am hard resetting the device, loading the carrier provisioning CAB, and testing in a 1x area.

well i also use mighymike rom and a half mile while walking to the pentagon u lose 3g coverage and only can access 1x! i have never seen this nofication! voice data and txt still work on my device but its just slow(internet that is)! the only thing i have done special to my phone is hspl, sim unlock, and deleted all setting in the service programming that deal with dun(so they cant see teathering)!!

You might lose 3G but you're probably still on a VZW tower. I also haven't experience this but like I said that's cause I'm always on VZW towers. Think this only happens when you're roaming on another tower.

And janko10 has a very good point. You have to be ROAMING in order to see this error. In my case, I was traveling in the boondocks in US Cellular territory.

that miek be a radio error popping up not rm specific... VZW radio specific... as i dont get this when im in a 1x area.

I believe it only affects devices on VZW network, while roaming on non-VZW towers in 1x mode. That might sound like it wouldn't happen very often, but next time you try a road trip of a few hours and get outside metro areas you'd be surprised!

It only happens on custom ROM's, and thus I think that Verizon isn't being 100% provisioned properly or the kitchen is flawed. Remember those Automatic-A and Automatic-B settings? I no longer have those.. When on stock ROM, I have to be on Automatic-B, as Automatic-A will cause issues, and VZW tells you to do this in my area. Thus, since I only have two options for CDMA Network Service in custom ROM's, that is where I suspect the issue lies. I do not believe it is specific to a certain custom ROM but I believe most if not all custom ROM's are affected.

ill send u a link to my rom to test before i go public. install my provisioning cab via my app in connections and test.

im in 1x all the time at home. i dont get this.

I have to drive about an hour and a half away from where I'm at in order to test this.. I'll probably be headed that way in about a month or so, perhaps earlier. If someone else lives on a fringe area where you roam to different towers and see this message pop up on your device, perhaps you could speak up and Juggalo_X can PM you the ROM?

I have also had this same problem. I am with Verizon, and get the error when I enter US Cellular area's. I'm currently using MightyRom. Would be nice to know what is causing the problem. Phone is a terrible pain to use once this starts happening.

lets put it this way, in my area i roam on bell towers all day long. there isnt a single telus tower here, i live 1.5 hour from any major city or telsu tower. this is why i think the error message is invoked by the radio some how.

Hrm... maybe it has to do with US Cellular... That's where I was roaming and got the problem, and that's where mrvoid was roaming and got the problem.

So the common link is VZW TP2 user with custom ROM, roaming on US Cellular.

I don't want to invalidate the Radio theory, but if that were so why would it not happen on stock ROM? I made the same trip in october with stock ROM and didn't get the message once.. then when I was in the US Cellular area for some time a week or two back and played with the ROM's I confirmed the custom ROM's I tried saw the issue, whereas flashing back to stock ROM fixed it.

Here are two other threads about this issue, a couple of fixes are suggested. I travelled over the weekend and as sooon as my phone went to "extended network" I started getting this error and my phone was unusable. I'm on mightyrom. Definitely a verizon issue with custom roms and roaming. I saw a post that the erice rom doesn't have this issue but i didn't try it.

Not so. It shows i'm on verizon and not roaming.

verizon rents most it's towers atleast around here. They are sprint towers. Smack dab in sprint territory with a corp office 7 miles away.

The links from snwbrd below have a couple possibilities.. I will need to play around with Juicy's ROM to see how it does, but it's going to be a few weeks before I'll know if it works.

Also, could someone closer to an affected area volunteer to test Juggalo_X's ROM?

The new mightyrom (11/25) has network settings in phone options for automatic-A and automatic-B. The new rom is based on a cdma rhodium 6.5 upgrade that just became available (from US cellular I think). I'm thinking this will fix the issue (hopefully). Won't be in an extended network area for a while to test though.

Hmmm...interesting. I just installed this ROM. I hope this will prove to be true. I won't be able to test for awhile either tho.
Can anyone tell me what's the diff between automatic A and automatic B?

Well, that's great news that Mighty has another updated rom available. I will certainly give it a try. As I was also getting the annoying popup, until I set the phone to Home only, instead of standard. As I mentioned in the other thread, about this, the message stays gone with it set to Home, but that's not a REAL solution. I also bounce between Verizon and US Cellular towers, every day. Definitely Auto A, Auto B related.

Can't wait to see if there is a solution for it, since we are now getting modified USCC 6.5 roms trickling in. I will know if the new rom takes care of the issue right away, since it takes less then a minute at my house for the popup to appear, unless I have it set to HOME only. I will flash tonight for sure!

Have you tried Juicy R3 or 4 by any chance??

I'm on Verizon & had the same annoying problem using Mighty & it has never happened to me running my current Juicy R3.

I'm not 100% sure I was in the same area however & I don't want it to sound like I'm criticizing Mighty's ROM, I'm not as I think it's an amazing ROM.

This is interesting because even though i'm in sprint territory, I have gone to call someone even on stock rom and got a stupid message saying this is not a US Celluar number.

Course i'm thinking wth!

SPrint towers, verizon network and getting US Celluar msg's.

Mighty Mike has a new release out that solves some persistant problems (Like the bluethooth issues). I wonder if it fixes this also?

I have not yet tried Juicy's roms. I am now anxious to try Mightys new rom and see if this issue disappears. Hopefully with the inclusion of the Automatic A and Automatic B settings, these issues will go away. There was definitely something missing previously for provisioning on their network, in many of the roms that are out.

I am glad to hear that Juicy's may be running as it should without these issues. I'll wait and see what this new MightyRom does. If that doesn't resolve the issue, without me having to set it to HOME, I will then try the latest from SSK. His roms have always seemed rock solid and setup appropriately for Verizon. I'm sure all the chefs will get these issues worked out pretty quickly now that there is a solid 6.5 base rom out there for these CDMA phones.

Might wait till after I stuff myself tomorrow, before flashing again though.

I just started testing different ROMs with the VZW TP2 and noticed this issue too. I installed MightyRom 11/25 and get this error continually popping up when the PRI displays Extended Network (roaming on Cellular South). What's interesting is that data is still working, even though this annoying error continually displays. I'm in Mississippi and frequently travel in "Extended Network" areas so I'll try some other ROMs and post my results.

I am also looking for a fix and on Verizon. I can duplicate the issue by going to my in laws and it also causes my phone to heat up cause the message will constantly keep popping up. I had to turn off my phone to keep my battery from dying. I am on the latest and greatest Mighty Rom and have made minimal changes to my phone. I will do some research in the posted threads and let u know if it works since I can create this issue at will. I will be going to Phoenix next weekend to see Favre play the Cards so will need to get it fixed before then since there are several roaming areas on the drive there.

Well flashed to latest Mighty Rom as of today. There are definitely more settings in there, then before, for network. However, even set to Auto B, I got constant popups. I also can get them to come up at will, just by going to certain spots on my property.

Again, the only way to make them stop, was by switching the network setting under :
Settings>Personal>Phone>CDMA Services>Network Service>tap - Get Settings> select HOME ONLY

For me that stops the popups instantly and instead of the phone reading extended network, it reads Verizon. My reception is the same, if not better. So, I really can't be sure that there is any other fix. I may try Juicys still, since I just flashed and am curious if I would still get the popup on his rom. Without me changing that setting this rom would be completely unusable for me, as the popups would come, almost as fast as I could close them. Thank god, that setting works, for me anyway.

I just wanted to throw this information out there in case anyone else experiencing this was wondering if the new Mighty Rom would fix that.

I also did a 10 hour drive yesterday and did not get the popup once, and had reception everywhere, with it set to HOME ONLY! As Verizon will only connect to approved towers anyway, there technically is no roaming. In other words you still get service in all the same places. Just without the popup and it will always say Verizon.

Looks like the voice only network popup appears when a Verizon phone is roaming on "Extended Network". Setting your phone to Home Only, disables roaming on Extended Network thus no popup.

Sounds like there is some kind of data roaming prevention feature causing this message, but when this message is constantly appearing, data is working.

I'm going to try some different ROMs and will report to this thread if I find one that doesn't have the pop-up appearing on Extended Network.

It's not 1X specific. I'm getting this when roaming on Cellular South EVDO Rev A. "Extended Network" PRI is displayed, data works, and the pop-up appears continually.

Have you tried *228 to program your phone and/or upgrade the PRL after installing a new ROM? This could relate the problem to the ROM or the provisioning.

Yes and the phone is provisioned and NAM programmed correctly because voice/data works on both Verizon Wireless network and on Extended Network. The issue is not PRL related because it has the correct PRL.

To be crystal clear, there are plenty of us her who are geeky enough about our phones to know what steps to take to update PRLs, etc.

I have the very same issue at work, where in the back of my building I can't get a Verizon signal to save my life.

Temporarily, I changed the setting to Home Only so it stops nagging me with the friggin' error message all the flipping time.

However, I would be ecstatic if someone with deeper knowledge of the holy guts of Windows Mobile and how it interfaces with Verizon's network services could offer some concrete advice or explain why unofficial ROMs perhaps cannot have the same Automatic A, B, Home Only settings as stock ROM.

as said before home only is NOT an option if you go where vzw does not have native coverage. I work in an area where I roam on uscc and if I set it to home only I get no signal... ill flash jucys r5 tonight and see if it still does it when I go to work tomro.

I'm on USCC towers right now, no nagging popup and same signal for me. That is why I get the nagging popup, because I'm mostly on USCC here in my area. However, setting it to Home Only, I still get the USCC signal, with no nags! Sorry that you then get no signal. Try turning on and off data, after setting it to Home only. I had to at first to get it going again. Been fine since. I don't know what else to tell you. The latest Mighty Rom has all the Auto A and Auto B switches in it and they don't help.

I realize that somewhere, there is probably a real solution though, I don't deny that. I welcome it!:)

I'm in an "Extended Network" only area where I roam on Cellular South (SID 5660, Central Mississippi). If I set my TP2 to Home Only it goes no service. I'm not sure why you can roam with home only, but it definitely doesn't work for me.

I went up to the mountains this past weekend and had this happen to me as well. So annoying. I am using Mighty Rom as well on VZW and would love to find a fix. I dont think I can help to much but Ill try.

I've been holding off on flashing my TP2 as I travel to Canada all the time. As far as I can tell this affects all custom ROMs and has not yet been resolved. Is that right?
Are there any ROMs that need to be tested? I could volunteer my services here. Personally, I'd like to stick to a fairly clean ROM if possible, but I can test some other stuff as well.
