I'm not 100% sure why this works for me either, although I'm thrilled that it does. I would not be able to stay on a custom rom, if it didn't!

I know that after setting mine to Home Only, at first I had no service as well. It took for me to reset the Data switch in the Comm Manager for it to come back. I also went into settings> Personal > Phone > CDMA Services > Network Service > Get settings (same page as Home Only) and set the Data Roam Guard to Never Ask and Allow Roaming. However those settings without setting to Home Only don't fix it by themselves. Also under Settings > Connections > Advanced > Make sure Verizon Wireless is selected as the default connection to the internet.

I realize many don't want to use this method, or it just plain doesn't work for you. I'm just trying to put out there what IS working for me right now. I know how annoying that popup can be!

I'm going to give the above fix a try and will report back if it works for me.

One other workaround I've thought of is to modify the Verizon PRL to have the roaming indicator set to "off" for all SIDs. I believe the message appears whenever the "Extended Network" ERI is called by the PRL to be displayed. Especially since data works (roaming 1X and EVDO) even though the phone is popping up the "voice only network" error. I'm going to modify and download to my phone next. I'll report back my findings with it too.

Re: VERIZON users on Custom Rom's - annoying voice-only network notification??

I live right on the "line" of Extended Network (US Cellular) and Verizon EV service. At home i only get 1X Extended Network, less than a mile north i get Verizon EV.

I have tried pretty much all of the newest ROM's and they all give me the same popup. If i set to Home Only = No Service. I have tried this on each rom with same results. The roms that have the A & B options still give the same popup.

I am forced to use the stock rom until there is a solution for this. I work in outside sales and over 1/2 my travels are in the 1X Extended Network are.

I live in South Dakota which is 80% Verizon.
I started getting this message like mad this weekend when I drove across the state.
I would hit pockets of "Extended Network" and the popup would come like once a second.
Very annoying.

I am using NRG's ROM.

I experienced this for the first time this weekend while traveling in PA out in the middle of nowhere. It is extremely annoying. My wife has the same phone with a stock ROM and was not having the problem.

Fortunately for me, I am not in an area where I can test a solution. There was some indication in other threads that changing the network selection had an effect on the problem. To that end I created a CAB to enable all network setting in the CDMA configuration screen (see below).

Settings Ã* Personal Ã* Phone Ã* CDMA Settings

If someone wants to take it and test out the various selections, you can PM me with your findings. If it does not help, I can keep looking.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment...1&d=1261455176

BTW: Standard is the settings on the STOCK ROM, so I am only hopeful that this will ease the pain, but the true solution has to be somewhere else.

Thanks are appreciated...

I didnt use your cab, but I did make the registry change to show all values in my menu.
I should be traveling through the same aread next week, so I will see if it works now that I have Auto-B selected.

I tried the changing network selection fix as described and it didn't work on MightyROM. Also had the the voice only network on Juicy. I ended up and went back to Stock.

Re: VERIZON users on Custom Rom's - annoying voice-only network notification??

I kept getting this message too, so I went back to stock.

I then decided to try another custom ROM without hard resetting and I no longer get that message. I know you're supposed to hard reset anytime you flash your ROM, but I figured it was worth a try.

I've done this with two different custom ROM's now and both have been fine. First I flashed Juicy's R6 ROM and now I'm running the latest MightROM. I haven't had one pop up on either one.

It would be nice if someone else could try this. If it works then we've just solved the pop up problem, if not then I guess I'm just lucky.

Just to clarify, flash back to a stock ROM and then update your phone via *228. After that flash any custom ROM, but do not hard reset and see if you still get the pop up.

Please report back any findings.

I will offer up one more provisioning script that replicates the "VZW Embedded GSM" connection entry found in the stock ROM.

This was suggested as a fix in the following thread:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=97845

Once again, I am unable to test my own solution as I am not currently traveling in an area with limited connection. Please try this and report back.

This is harmless as it just creates a connection entry that can simply be deleted.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment...1&d=1261626447

Here is the contents of the attached CAB - as you can see it simply creates a new PPP Entry for the internet.

Which one did you try?
  • Changing the network configuration
  • Adding the VZW embedded GSM dialer entry

Try switching back to standard and try the dialer entry above. Let me know how it works. I really want to get this solved before my next round of travel and I will keep working at understanding the problem.

Can someone try and provide some more detail for me:
  • What is the exact message you are getting?
  • Is there a title on the messagebox? What does it say?
  • Can someone try and figure out what process owns the message? If you are on Energyrom, the task manager can get down to the process level.
Thanks...

I am interested in your success. I am just looking to figure out the specific differences. Perhaps your experience should shed some light on what the difference is between stock and custom. If I understood the possible residue left by flashing (why do we need to hard reset?), perhaps it would be clear to me where to look.

I am looking to solve the issue and not just work around the problem.

How do you get to the old task manager & what do process are you looking for exactly. I'm CDMA noticed your att?

This fix has worked for me and is Absolutly needed for me to run Visual Voice Mail. It seems to be a data connect. Before using it, I would get that ijiot popup while on verizon and extended verizon. I have never shown to be off their network entirely so am unable to test what happens if your off even extended. Once in a blue moon I may get it. ( 1 room in my house dont ask me why dont know)

I have AT&T and Verizon, but I had this problem on my Verizon phone.

There are plenty of task managers out there. I am just trying to figure out what process owns that message.

I completely understand that you're trying to actually fix this problem, and I'm sure we all appreciate it (I know I do).

I was just trying to figure out if I'm just getting lucky or if this is in fact a workaround for this problem.

If this is in fact a workaround then maybe we can start gathering information from that and go from there.

Just a thought.

I am right there with you. I would try it if I had a way of testing, but right now I have good coverage using a VZW tower.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.7 (Windows Mobile; PPC; Opera Mobi/35432; U; en) Presto/2.2.1)

Tried both cabs in this thread (swiching to auto a/b made no diff) also tried flashing to stock/programed and then flashed to the newst nrg leo and it still did it... I live 5 min away from an area that I get this popup on so if anyone wants me to test stuff I can. Also tried home only btw and I lost all signal so thats not an option.

Re: VERIZON users on Custom Rom's - annoying voice-only network notification??

Let me start by saying I don’t have a solution for this, but as someone who loves NRG’s ROMS and travels overseas a great deal, I’ve made several observations that I will share which hopefully will provide clues to whomever has the right experience to figure this out. Basically, the NRG CDMA ROM is unusable if you have Verizon and travel a lot. But as several have said, I don’t think this is a ROM issue, but rather a carrier provisioning issue. As far as I can tell, looking all over the forums (this thread seems most relevant) and comparing stock and NRG custom registries, there are many things missing in the most recent Verizon provisioning cabs as it relates to traveling outside of the Verizon network.
A) Assisted dialing entries and dlls/executables are completely missing (this is needed to adjust the dialing prefix depending on where you are and how you saved phone numbers – e.g. with or without +1,001, etc.)
B) Under phone->options->CMDA Services and GSM/UMTS services, many of the options are missing or different (some of it including “Network Services->Automatic-A/B”) have been discussed here
C) If you are in a GSM or UMTS region, then the data dialing option of “VZW Embedded GSM” is missing (explained in this thread already) and you cannot connect to a data network even though you can connect to a 3G voice network fine
D) If you are in a CDMA area, then everything seems to work but you get the frequent annoying message that this thread started with
I have tried all of the ideas mentioned in this thread, as well as tried copying several registry settings, dlls and executables from my stock rom to NRG’s to no avail. I will keep trying different things (blindly since I really don’t understand the guts of the OS or the Verizon stuff) and will report any progress, but until this is fixed, I’m back to stock. L

Re: VERIZON users on Custom Rom's - annoying voice-only network notification??

Mike has a jan 4 update for his standard rom. Has anyone tested it yet? None of the upgrade notes mentioned this problem so I assume it hasn't.

I will flash it this evening and test it out and post the results tomorrow. I'll just be driving through extended network and parking in a verizon zone so it won't cripple me.

His rom is so far superior to the verizon stock rom that I am almost willing to not use the phone for data on the days that I travel...just to keep his rom.

i am still getting the message. i am updating this thread from my phone so data is working. that means that the message is not only annoying....it is also wrong.

I am going to hunt for a good task manager that will tell me what dll owns that message.

cptok 01-05-2010 03:32 PM

Re: VERIZON users on Custom Rom's - annoying voice-only network notification??

Thanks Thayer. This is an interesting one... must be a setting - and the Mighty ROM's don't touch the radio or provisioning OR... might it be the unlocker HardSPL? Just don't know enough about what generates that message. So your idea to identify dll would be a great step in the right direction.

thayer 01-05-2010 04:40 PM

Re: VERIZON users on Custom Rom's - annoying voice-only network notification??

Windows\HTCMessage.exe 82

this is the program(not the dll) causing the message. I found a good task manager that was able to give me that. im going to play around and see if i can't
cant manually make it go away.

Edit: Nothing, I even tried deleting that exe in the windows file using total commander to no avail. I'm not comfortable with the registry so I'll need to study up on which part is which before I go editing like a madman.

Energy does so much customization with his it's impossible. Some people can go straight to SMS, but it doesnt even show up and under OEM in reg entries there is no sms on his latest 28011.

I live on edge of extended myself. discovered this when i reloaded stock to pull infor from registry files. I am on Energy roms, and found if i use 21885 the popups were obnoxious however on his 28011 they are not. what i did find was if you sink towers. (dial *228, option #2) this cut back to once in a blue moon. I also added the 2nd (normally embedded GSM network) network as the phone seems to look for this as well. I get maybe one or 2 popups over a couple of days. that I can handle.

Missing Data Connection: Add this to your current network connection and when done make sure its set to auto. ( so it switches to data only when needed. I can't do half the things without it)

Go to connections, connections, manage existing connections ... add new... where you see my connection #777

Name: Hint use whatever name your MMS is using, if its verizon, use verizon, if it says VZW use VZW.. Phone connection is cellular line, click next

for enter number use: emgsm.vzw3g.com, click next,

User name: yournumber@emgsm.vzw3g.com
Password: vzw

Your done and almost forgot, reset phone ( turn off & on)

I just went back and read your post. I gave up last month and went back to stock but with your experience, I think I will try MightyROM again and see what happens. I'm in a heavy "Extended Network" area (Cellular South) and have EVDO roaming on them. I'll try it this week and report back my findings.
