Re: Off topic: Products Similar to Orb
Can I ask why you're ditching Orb? I've been using it for years (for free) and have no complaints. It only became really great when Kinoma Play beautifully integrated it into their software.
I've also used TVersity and found that while it does the best on-the-fly transcoding, an easy-to-use interface on my TP2 was far more important. Kinoma Play + Orb = Win. |

Re: Off topic: Products Similar to Orb
I only ask because I feel that Orb is pretty CPU intensive on my desktop (maybe time for an upgrade) and I haven't looked at the market in years, so I thought maybe something better may have come out since then.

Re: Off topic: Products Similar to Orb
On the fly transcoding is always going to be taxing, as far as I know. Some other solutions might include using a NAS with various funplug packages. search around for "dns-321 hacks" and you'll find a world of cool uses. upside: low power usage and wont tax existing PCs. plus the added benefit of having network storage. downside: will cost you. a NAS unit is $100 plus the cost of the drives.
just some ideas. i know they dont exactly fit what you're looking for, but the transcoding media server can be very powerful. good luck in your quest! of course, you always have the option of scrapping together a mediocre system to just run orb or other media server functions. |
