Is it a good idea to buy clean-ESN phone from eBay to avoid mandatory data plan?

I bought week old phone locally, checked status with verizon and then activated on pageplus, no contract using verizon network. I understand this may change, but does give access to 3g data for light users. Uses verizon prepaid coverage.
Another consideration is warranty status and support may be lacking.
