How can I disable the wait / pause stuff tied to the star key (*)?

On both the stock VZW and the MightyROM ROMs I've had on my TP2, when I press star in rapid succession, it displays * then "p" then "w". From searching, I gather that this is for building dialing sequences where you need to add pauses or waits.

Our coporate voicemail system lets you check your messages by pressing **, but I cannot do that from my TP2. If I go slowly enough to get two *'s, it's too slow for the voicemail system to recognize the command.

The one thing I could not find is whether there is a way to turn this pause / wait feature associated with the star key off. Does anyone know how?
