Re: Windows Mobile 6.5
when you flash a new ROM...it overwrites EVERYTHING from the previous ROM. Your data on your SD card should NOT be affected. However, your contacts, settings, etc. will be erased.
There are a number of backup options out there...from backing up wirelessly/in the cloud with ActiveSync (outlook or google), MyMobile from M$, or a program called PIMBackup that runs directly off of your sd card, there's also programs such as SPB backup that backs up almost everything such as how your phone is set up.
there are MANY things that you can do while you flash your first ROM...so...I suggest that you take some time to research the upgrade forum stickies here AND in the Touch Pro forum (while I did most of my learning and research.) Use PIMBackup as a simple way to back up your contacts (at a minimum.) Choose a ROM (recommend Mighty OR Juicy) since they are VERY popular...so not too bad as a start point. Ensure you have all that cabs for the programs that you want/already have...and flash away!
Be advised, flashing ROMs can be addicting, rewarding and frustrating...at different times and all the time! Remember that not you'll encounter bugs...but rest assured that you'll receive better technical support here at PPC Geeks than you EVER would from your carrier (unless its carrier specific crap!)
You have the links to HSPL (unlocks your phone for flashing a ROM) and you have links to the upgrade forum...one last thing is not all the paperclips at the far end of the title of each thread. If you click on the paperclip...you'll see ALL the attachments that were every posted in that thread. It'll help you find the cabs that you may want to have (be it tweaks OR apps.)
any more questions, I'll be glad to assist!
