Task Bar Shortcut To End Data Connection

Hi all,

Can't seem to find a solution to end the data connection from the Home Screen. I used to have a ppc6700 and there was a registry hack that enabled you to tap on the task bar's data connection icon. This would provide the option to disconnect the data connection. It also showed the time connected. I can't seem to find it.

Can anyone help?

Re: Task Bar Shortcut To End Data Connection

There is the ability to turn the data connection on/off in the Comm Manager (Start | Programs | Comm Manager).

even if you find it...it wont do you any good because of the notification manager supersedes everything on the task bar...trust me...i have tried.best bet is to change the long end key to kill data transmission.

This might also help you understand what's going on with your data connection...

Re: Task Bar Shortcut To End Data Connection

One other note. Not sure if you're using the Rhodium Keyboard Controller or not for mapping keys, but with that you can actually map a key to disconnect your data connection. I use the tool for mapping a lot of other keys, like Fn+C/X/V to get back the old CTL+C/X/V because I don't have a dedicated CTL key, and a lot of other cool mappings. However, I've not actually tried the "Terminate data connection" action it offers.

If you're not interested in the other mapping abilities you'd get from that tool it's probably not worth it just to get a data disconnect key though. Food for thought.

EDIT: Okay, had nothing else to do, so I tried it...and it works. I mapped a "long press" of my mute key on the back of the phone to the "Terminate data connection" in the Rhodium Kbd Controller and it does work. Now be aware though...if you have anything actively running that needs to keep the data connection open, it instantly turns it back on. I had ActiveSync on for instance for push e-mail, and it was restarting the connection. Once I turned that off though, the data connection did stay off properly when I pressed my pre-programmed mute button. Also if you have never changed the settings for Opera i.e. Push Internet, I believe that's going to keep the connection open too.

Re: Task Bar Shortcut To End Data Connection

Isnt it at all possible to disable the manila notification that pops up when the taskbar is clicked? I personally prefer clicking on the little individual icons and dealing with their functions that way...instead of how its set up now...with click after click and screen after screen.

i saw someone mentioning removing the registry entries for it but thats entirely too risky even for me...i dont recommend it at all.

Re: Task Bar Shortcut To End Data Connection

CovKid66,

Thanks! I actually just installed Rhodium Keyboard Controller today for an unrelated attempt. (I was trying to map a hard key to the voice recorder. I just can't seem to find the right executable to do it. Care to give a hint ). I'll definitely try mapping a hard key. I have already disabled push in opera and just about everywhere else I think.

I agree w/ a few of the other posters. It would be nice if selecting the task bar provided more info for each of the icons on the task bar, even if on one screen. I think I'd actually prefer it that way vs a separate page for ea icon. (battery level, disconnect data, etc.) This seems like a great idea! I wish someone could put that together.

I'll let you know how I make out. [EDIT: WORKED PERFECTLY! Whoops scratch that. Before I mapped it, the end button would return me to the home page w/ a quick press. Now that doesn't work. It seems like as soon as you map the END key to perform any other task using a long press or a double press, the single press loses it's it's original default functionality. Any ideas?)

EDIT: Figured it out. First you have to set the default function to "DO NOT MAP". Save it and then start again. Select the END key again. = Rule 2. EVENT = Double Click (choose whatever you want). At some point it will ask you to Catch the screen. So I went to the home page and selected CATCH. This is the window I want the double click to work w/. (In other words it leaves open the possibility of a double click of the END button in another window doing something different.) It brought me back to the Config screen. I entered the action = Terminate Data Connection and VOILA!

Thanks again!
