Anyone else having this issue? (pic)

http://mutiny32.com/pic/TP2chipflaw.jpg

The little metal "foot" on the back of the screen designed to keep the keyboard from getting mashed is chipping the paint away from where the plastic seam is. the clear protector is also visibly worn the entire path the foot travels and is starting to get damaged as well. This is after only a few weeks' use.

My theory is that there is enough play in the phone's hinge, especially at this end of the phone to allow that little metal foot to basically work its way into the seam. This isn't good.

Should I ask Sprint about it? At the rate this is happening, the corner won't have any paint on it or may even chip off in a few months. Crap :(

those strips are meant to come off, and your right, there is a little metal thing that hangs down on both sides scratching it as you slide it back n forth.........the side that holds the hing and screen together..

I'm not so sure they're meant to come off. The seem to be protecting the keyboard shroud. Does the instructions say to take them off?

Add some lube, maybe that would help.

Other than that, I honestly wouldn't sweat something like this. The device is going to go through wear and tear. Once you knick it up a bit more things l ike this aren't really going to matter.

The plastic is just for shipping, just like what was on the screen when you received it. I have the nick on my corner like that ... seems to be normal wear. Once it is at a certain point I doubt it will get worse or have the corner fall off. Normal wear.

That plastic seems to be secured by adhesive and is of the screen-protector type. I don't buy that it's supposed to come off. It appears to be scratch protection from those metal feet.

The plastic is most certainly meant to come off. It cracks me up every time I hear someone say otherwise. Now if you WISH to keep them on for protection, that's perfectly fine and may well work but it wasnt the intention.

Why on earth would a manufacturer design a product that scratches itself without a delicate, removable piece of packing plastic to stop it? That's just silly, seriously. If it was there for that purpose they would tell you and give you extras or perhaps... just perhaps, come up with a better design.

I'd normally agree with you, but that is actually a paint chip that happened within a week of me having the phone and it has only gotten worse. I could see it as a catalyst for the entire corner to lose its paint.

Re: Anyone else having this issue? (pic)

I didn't realize the strips were there until the one of the right came off because it got scrunched up as I was sliding the keyboard. If it was suppose to stay there, it wouldn't have done that.

Looking at your pic though, I don't think the chip is the because of the sliding action. I don't think any part hangs over that far.

Like I said. It's not static-cling plastic like the packing plastic. It's the same plastic that is glued onto the back of the screen with the Sprint logo on it. Normally temporary shipping protective surfaces aren't glued on. In fact, they never are. This is. It is glued on and it protects the exact area where the metal scrapes the keyboard shroud. It makes sense to me for them to do this. Especially since they had wear issues with the original TP.

There is enough play in the hinge of the phone that makes the corner of the metal foot hit the precise area where this chip seems to have started. See for yourself. Close the phone and "wiggle" the two halves of the phone.

If it was there for protection, wouldn't it be replaceable? What is the point of having something to take damage if it can't be replaced later? These strips seem to have been added before the screen is attached so replacing them probably isn't an option. I imagine it was for protection only while assembling the device.

Not for me. The chip I see in your picture is on the rim. On the back of my phone there is also a rim, then inside is the little foot. The rim on the back of the screen lines up with the rim on the keyboard. The foot is on the inside and no amount of wobble outside of ripping the two parts apart will make the foot touch the outside rim.

It looks entirely replaceable when you have the screen fully tilted.

Good luck with that. Even with the screen fully tilted the screen hangs over a large portion of the plastic. You would have about a mm of space to slide it under the screen. If it was adhesive at all it would be impossible to apply.

lets put it this way, if the plastic was there to protect it, why are peoples that leave em on keep getting scrunched and coming off? The plastic is getting scratched and will give soon, this is just a minor design flaw and wont hurt nothing or hinder performance other than have scratches or nicks on the sides........ PLASTIC IS MEANT TO COME OFF DUDES.........LOL

When my phone is closed, the foot rests on that exact spot.

I see it as HTC doing a CYA after realizing that the metal feet molded into the backplate tend to etch down the sides of the keyboard. As for scrunching, one person said it. Who else said it? Now I'm curious because it looks to protect the two halves of the phone from scratching each other.

You use soap to apply these type of protective surfaces.

It's definitely meant to be removed. It's no thicker than plastic food wrap. It's only there to make sure it's all scratch free when U first receive it.

I took off my plastic strips and theres no scratching or rubbing at all.. same with my mogul.. its just there for shipping like everyone else is saying..you can leave it if you want but mine startin peeling by itself so i had to take it off

LMAO you guys are hilarious that really think any plastic that ships with the phone is suppose to stay on there. It's all for shipping and what not. Really who has that much plastic on there phone??? Just like someone said earlier it's just like the plastic that came on the screen, and i'm guessing if it didn't have words and tf3d on it you would assume that was meant to stay there as well lol. i guess HTC should start putting "remove" on the plastic to help these folks out haha

One of those plastic strips scrunched itself all up the first day I had the phone sliding the KP open.

There is NO WAY they where meant to stay on after purchase........

There was a thread on this right after it came out in the US. About half the people saw scrunching on the right side in three days. Not something a permanent component would do.

Way back when I had a mogul there were longs threads about taking the plastic off of the keyboard where it slides ... it's never ending. LOL

Can we see a picture without the strip?

EDIT: See this. Different Model but I guess it would be on this one as well if it was meant to stay on.

I too think the plastic protectors are meant to come off. One of mine practically fell off when I slid open the phone for the first time. Trouble is, I like them and wish I could keep them on. Alas, one fell off, the other doesn't want to come off... Now I'm all lopsided..... looks like oppo.

I took the plastic off on day 1, many slides later the edges of my TP2 are as pristine as the day it came out of the box. The plastic is meant to come off people (IMO). :angry7:

You can leave it on or take it off.
I removed mine and there is a big piece on the back of the screen too, that I removed as well you will be surprized on how much cooler the phone runs and it seems to me to run faster.
As for the rubbing issue I have none not even wear but I take care not put it in my pocket! It is supposed to be in the pouch that you need to purchase.

lol op you're being too paranoid. it's suppoosed to come off. if you had a tp or even an older model, you'd know this. people keep telling you this, but you seem to refuse to accept it. so leave it on, but stop telling people it's supposedo to stay on. I suppose the big SPRINT sticker on the back is supposed to stay on too? If they wanted to brand our phones they would have painted it on.

The plastic on mine scrunched up and I had to take it off the first day I had my TP 2.. I think that the same strips lasted on my TP maybe a week at most... HTC has figured out how to pack all that is in the TP 2 into this tiny litlte plastic case, give it enough power to run, and do just about anything we want it to, I'd hope that they could figure out some better alternative to the super scrunchy packing tape strips to protect the super scratchable plastic from the super scratching metal foot.

Super... :-P
