Re: DIY Black VZW battery cover (pics!)

A bit of reviving a dead thread, but I had such great results with this I just had to share. I used RIT Royal Blue first and dyed the whole back. Then I taped off the part I wanted to stay blue with scotch tape and dyed the whole back black. It's been a few days and none of the dye has come off. The phone looks better in person, I couldn't get a good picture of it.

You need to get some RIT dye, if you google "RIT dye" you'll find it. Apparently you can get it at some grocery or hobby stores. I got mine at a JoAnn Fabrics store. It comes in powder or liquid; I used the powder.

Put about 8 cups of water in a stainless steel pot and heat it up on the stove. You want to get the temperature to a point where there are small bubbles forming on the bottom of the pot, but you don't want it to boil. Once the water is at a good temperature add about half the bag of powder and stir it until it is dissolved.

Then you can take your battery cover off your phone and put it in the pot and stir it for about 10 minutes or so. You can check the color in the middle of the process and if it is the hue you like then you can stop there.

The first time I dyed mine the color wasn't entirely even, but a little bit of drying and buffing using a paper towel worked quite well to fix it.

NOTE: Make sure you use a stainless steel pot otherwise you could very well dye the pot as well as your cover. Someone else suggested using a plastic bag or something like that to contain the dye and water as to not stain your pot (I think it was for the original touch pro, but I can't find the link atm).

Here is a post for the Sprint version, the dying process is the same. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...17#post1209117

Re: DIY Black VZW battery cover (pics!)

Any ideas on how to take some of the color out of the silver first? I want to die mine red but I tried it on the stylus and its turning bronze. I used the rit removal stuff but it doesnt work that great.

Re: DIY Black VZW battery cover (pics!)

although it looks different, it's still pretty boring. there were some posted of the colored ones.

i like the sprint's version, it adds a splash of color to an otherwise drab corporate looking phone without screaming "HEY, LOOK AT ME!!" like those hot pink moto razr or lime green samsung reclaim.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/5.0.3521/18.794; U; en) Presto/2.4.15)

My dye barely lasted like 3 weeks and now it
looks faded and ugly. It is wearing off into a
light purple. Will post pics soon
