Has anyone got their TP2 to remote desktop connect to Vista Home premium? - Page 3

Well there is a thought. You actually had me thinking... i did remember seeing that setting on windows 7 but when i go to system properties and go to the remote tab the only option i see is a check box to allow remote assistance and then when i go to advanced there is the option to allow this computer to be controlled remotely. Then there is a section on time for invitations. not a section for network level authentication like in windows 7.

But if this setting is on the ultimate version of vista and not on the Home version... is there another way to check if i am requring network level authentication? like the registry? or somewhere less tricky >.>

i wasnt trying to be a prick, i was just in a hurry. and i have ultimate but i recenty bought a new pc that came with home premium... so i just dont want to spend another 150 dollars on an OS that i am going to replace in a couple of months. seeing as i paid 400 for the first ultimate and its installed on a different computer not at my current location. and im just saying my router settings are fine because if checked them about a thousand times and im getting through from my lap top from outside my LAN.. so my router is forwarding properly.

The problem is Remote Desktop is not a feature of Vista Home Premium. You need Vista Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise to be able to connect TO a Vista machine with Remote Desktop. You can use the Remote Desktop Client on any version of Vista to connect to a different machine. Attached is what your Remote tab would look like if you had RD capabilities. Your only option seems to be third party software.

But i can connect to my vista home machine. from any machine... that is what the batch file i added to my computer fixed.. it didnt add this page... but it did make it so i could connect to this computer.

Connect to it how and with what? I'd be curious to see this batch file and what it does. Where did you get it from?

Edit: I think I found the batch files and DLL that you installed. And since you do say this worked from a WinXP machine, I'd guess the Network Level Authentication has something to do with it. But you can't check that because RD doesn't show up on your remote tab. How big is the sysdm.cpl file in your %Windows%\System32 folder (actual bytes preferably)?

at the top there is a link that says "please see this post" wich takes you to this page

and then you simply download the file that corisponds with what you need... i am on vista SP 1 64 bit so i downloaded the second one down..

when you open the zip there is 3 files a read me and a registry entry.

there will be a file for 64 bit basic 64 bit premium and 64 bit ultimate.. and the same for 32 bit. basically no matter how you are configured there is a file for it.

It is very possile to add not only remote desktop to home versions of windows but all of the networking functionality. Yall need to get over the surprise of that. It is really tough though because you will be missing some key menus. You need that remote desktop window to change the authentication level setting that allows non vista/7 machines to connect. I would wager that that is your problem. There has to be a way to do that on the back end but I doubt you'll find the answer here. I would post your issue on the rdp forum. Cant be the first to run into it.

I have had no problems using Remote Desktop. You need to make sure VISTA is not blocking incoming connections. You also need to make sure your firewall is configured correctly.

You have had no problems connecting TO a Vista Home Machine? (ie vista home basic or premium) Because Vista Home is not made for that. you would have to hack it. If you are connecting to vista Ultimate then you wouldnt have any problems. And ANY vista computer can remote desktop another computer. the problem lies with the computer hosting, not being a client.

I actually made a rough draft How To on this step last night as like 3 am. getting past vista's defaults was easy... i just almost went nuts trying to figure it out. now getting past that is easy if they just follow that guide.. then hopefully someone else will be able to improve and pass where i am stuck.
