Not to hijack the thread here but.....

Please start a new thread with your over seas experience! Preferably when you first get there (just to confirm functionality in short) and then detailing voice and data capabilities and pre-paid options you are utilizing. :-) We all (Sprint guys for sure) are hoping it IS just as easy as it sounds.

Thanks

Does your Evdo data connection go out the window when you have the GSM card in? It would suck to be without a data connection just to preserve minutes on the VZW bill.

We get it, the Telus version works in the states on US GSM carriers (as it should), but you have to pay for an unlock code. I started this thread more directed towards Sprint and VZW TP2 that were not supposed to work in the US.

Sorry if this is a stupid question... But does Verizon allow roaming under their plan on GSM networks? The only thing that makes me wonder is in some of the pictures I see a Verizon/Vodafone sim card.

I did not have much with the global customer support in getting an unlock code.
I just ported my number to Verizon yesterday and they said you have to be with them at least 60 days for them to provide an unlock code.

It's awesome because we're not restricted to using the SIM card Verizon provided & pay the same expensive rates you're paying with your Sprint GSM card. We can pop in a pre paid SIM card when traveling to another country and pay local rates. It's A LOT cheaper.

The Sprint TP2 is already unlocked for int'l roaming with any sim card straight out of the box.
Hopefully we will soon be able to use a domestic sim card at home...once the wizards figure that out it will be nice to have a truly universal device...

Re: VZW TP2 Roaming on AT&T..... SOLVED

I just bought a vzw tp2. My reason for wanting the dual phone is different than most. I own my own company. I have two cell phones/numbers. One if for my family and very close friends only, I NEVER use it for business. The second phone/number I use when out of the office, travelling etc. if I need to contact a customer or business associate. The tp2 is perfect for only needing to carry one phone and yet maintain my privacy on my personal cell line and yet have my more public cell number/phone available without having to carry two phones, two chargers etc.

Here's the part I don't quite understand. The phone has settings for CDMA, another for GSM and the third is Global. The tp2 came defaulted to the Global setting but the phone is on vzw and running CDMA. What happens if I get the phone unlocked and it is running on vzw on the Global setting and a call comes in to the GSM line?

I can see a number of available scenarios that can be used to work around different issues. E.G., a call comes in to the GSM number but doesn't go through because the phone is on CDMA, I can set up a text msg notifier to my vzw number that will tell me that I had a call and I can return it right away. Same if I'm on GSM and a call comes in to the CDMA carrier. But with the Global setting I don't know what would happen there.

A lot of interesting possibilities here for practical use for me so I'm anxious to see where this thread goes and what info can be found out as to how this is all going to work.

Since there are a two radios (CDMA and GSM), they could both be used at the same time. However it is quite unlikely that windows mobile is equipped to handle two cell radios at the same time.

Most likely "Global" is setup to only look for GSM when there is no Verizon network.

Someone who has an ATT or TMO sim can quickly test it out.

Global works like this.

When you first turn on the phone, it'll detect the SIM card and put itself in Global mode. It'll also ask you for your SIM PIN on bootup.

Then it'll go on trying to connect to the Verizon network. If it doesn't find a CDMA signal, it'll timeout (approx. 1-2 min.) and ask if you would like to switch networks (GSM). You can select Yes/No and has a check box for "Never ask me again"

It'll time out regardless of how long the phone has been on if it loses CDMA signal. For example, this weekend I was in rural parts of Vermont that have spotty Verizon coverage. If the phone last signal for a long enough period of time, it would ask to switch to GSM.

So no, the phone doesn't handle both radios at the same time. If your on CDMA, GSM goes to voicemail and vice versa.
