Sprint EVDO vs 1X: Which consumes more power?

Just one last question before bedtime. Tomorrow will be the first time I have the TP2 at work. At work, the signal often jumps from EVDO to 1X and back. I have my phone set to automatic. I'm inside a control room and the signal is very weak. Which is better, or should I say which consumes less battery power? Is there a right answer? By setting it to roam only, will I save power?

Re: Sprint EVDO vs 1X: Which consumes more power?

to answer one of your questions, 1X take more battery consumption than EVDO does. This is mainly because when the phone goes to 1X mode it continuously searches for a EVDO connection to get back to. (basically looking for the towers)

what i would do is if your in a control system room and if you have a phone there which you can use for personal calls as well, you should call forward all calls to that number while your there.

Re: Sprint EVDO vs 1X: Which consumes more power?

1xRTT will use more power for data because it's just an older and less efficient tech. Over all, it shouldn't have a drastic effect on battery life.

What you should be more worried about is the phone hopping between EvDO and 1xRTT because it is constantly changing modes and subsequently drains the battery due to this ping-pong effect.

There is a registry edit that allows you to select which mode you are in under phone settings. Look around for that, I'd find it for you, but I'm on my phone. Whatever you do, DO NOT set it to EvDO only. You will not be able to receive any SMS messages or calls.

This isn't usually the case; the phone is not searching for towers, it is teetering between which mode it has determined it can reliably stay in. It would only be "hunting" if you were exactly in between two or more towers with almost identical signal strength.

It would do this however if you were switching between a preferred carrier and a roaming carrier. Both would drain battery life, though.
